Hi all - does anyone have any experience with this medication for cats?  I have a little foster who is on 10 mg twice daily to help with anxiety - she had a tail and toes from two feet amputated due to frostbite and slipped the cone and chewed them up pretty badly after the first surgery (she wasn't under my care then!).  The vet is concerned that she is a self mutilator.

Anyway, I'm just looking for anyone who has experience with this drug and cats.  This little kitty has the sweetest personality and doesn't seem stressed at all, I'm wondering how much of this is the medication and how much might actually be her personality?  Any experience with weaning them off of it?

Thanks for any replies / info!

Hi there .. I don't have any personal experience with this medication, however there is one member here that I know of, who's cat is receiving this for possible anxiety-related elimination issues. The following is a link to a page that discusses some of the side effects associated with this medication. This might be of some help to you : http://www.vetinfo.com/side-effects-amitriptyline-cats.html

I am very sorry to hear about the amputations. I hope she is managing well and will be okay. I am sure someone else will be along to chime in with more information for you.

Thank you!  I've done some research on the drug but I hadn't found that page.

Charm is managing quite well and healing nicely, so it is just a matter of time before the sutures come out.  I'm just hoping that after that I can wean her off of the meds, take her cone off and find her a nice forever home!  If her personality without the meds is anything like she is now, she will be a sweet little friend for someone.  I'm just not sure how much of the cat I know right now is due to the blue pills!  She doesn't want to sit in the quarrantine room so she is allowed to wander the house when I'm home - my other cats don't mind strangers and she doesn't seem to care about them either.  She mostly wants to follow me around and get pets!

She sounds like a real sweety!
Hope you are successful in finding that special someone. Then again, she might just grow on you

Haha - not an option!  I have four of my own, including two foster fails...  If I fail on others won't be able to foster more, so they all have to find fover homes elsewhere (but they are welcome here as long as it takes!).  Four permanent residents is more than enough for me (especially when they all want to snuggle in bed at night with us).
