None.   Exotic who is born as longhair gets registerd as persian.   Its not unusual, as they are sibling breeds, with partly the same breeding and gene pool.

And of course, if a persian happens to be born as shorthair, it gets registered as exotic.

This is at least in the big european association FIFe, but I suppose its similiar in most others.

The exotic longhair looks almost identical to the Persian. The main difference is gentics. Exotic's are a cross between Persians and American shorthairs.

Different blood lines, different gentics. In spite of looking very similar breeds are determined by genes, not appearance.

Without a DNA it would be almost impossible to tell the difference just from looks. But genetically they would not be the same breed

Ah, it explains a discussion I did followed once.  The beginning was, someone observed, longhaired cats tended to be  slower and more lazy than shorthaired.

One of the participants in that thread was  such a persian breeder I mentioned above:  In her litters she get both longhaired persians and shorthaired exotics, from the same parents.

as small kittens, the difference wasnt apparent, as the long fur become visibly later.

But she noticed, the kittens crawling first out from the nest, turned later almost always to be shorthaired, ie exotics.

The slower ones - turned out with time usually  to be longhaired.

But here we get the explanation: it was probably NOT the coming fur lenght.  It was the shorthaired had of course also more of the  American Shorthairs genes in them, more than their longhaired siblings.

Although genes are usually not coming in groups, but randomly individually...   Anyway, here somewhere is the explanation...   the shorthaired do have some genes from american shorthair, they arent "just" shorthaired persians...
