I got home with him about 2 weeks ago now from the shelter he had been in for a long time.  They had taken very good care of him and when I got him he appeared in excellent health and weighed in at over 11 pounds.

He started having bloat and gas within a week of coming to my home and then extreme diarrhea.  He was using the litter from 12 to 16 times a day and it was pure liquid and smelly (more than normal) so I called and made an appointment with my veterinarian.  I should have anyway with him but the shelter had him checked over and gave him a clean bill of health before I picked him up.

The vet checked him and told me that he had hookworms and a type of tapeworm that was not the type gotten from fleas and he had probably had them from his foraging for food days.  They were the type that usually only came from eating wild critters.  He gave him 3 shots and a liquid in syringes for me to give orally for a few days.

Mickey is not a good medication taker.  I feel like I am manhandling him to get the oral med taken and I will be glad when he has had the last dose.

Now my question is this and I hope that you all can give me some advice.  The medication that I have is to take care of the tapeworms and he got the first dose at the vets office so I know he took that.  The dose he got this day was partially wasted as he fought like a tiger to NOT have that stuff in his mouth.  I want him to get the benefit of the meds as the vet intended and do not want to have to take him back in.  Can anyone tell me how to do the meds so that he actually gets what he is supposed to be taking.

The bloat is mostly gone from his belly and he is eating and drinking.  No vomiting.  He does sleep a lot and for the last couple days has not done much in the way of playing although at times when something catches his eye, he does try to play for a while.  He does "cry" some and sometimes seems to feel like he is feverish.  I know that cats should not have milk and am hesitant to give him much other than water to drink as I am unsure of what is allowable for him.  I did open a can of broth out of desperation to flavor some rice that I was told to add a probiotic supplement to.

Suggestions are welcome and I will try most anything for this cat.  He is already an important part of my family and I would love to see him thrive.  He is a sweet cat and has a wonderful disposition and manner, but even if he was a little demon he would deserve to have a good life.

I don't use the worming paste for exactly this reason. They spit more out than swallow and then start gagging. I always use worming tablets so much easier, plus you know they swallowed the full dose.

Have you tried mixing it in with his food ? Probably won't eat his food then though lol

The only thing I can think of to help is maybe asking your vet if you can have tablets instead of paste

He now has a respiratory infection too and the vet has started him on a liquid antibiotic and surprisingly he is taking it with no real problem.  I am concerned about him and the sneezing and now he seems to be breathing harder and sometimes panting through his mouth.

I am also concerned that it may be something that my other cat can pick up and then I would have two cats in trouble.  It is in some ways harder to be a pet parent than that of a child.  At least they can tell you when they hurt and where.

Quick follow up....Mickey is no longer bloated.  His diarrhea is over and we have since treated him for a respiratory infection and sneezing.  He is much better on all fronts and he has been playing with his "big brother" and tumbling and the two of them make a fine furry ball rolling across the floor as they tumble and play.  Neither is aggressive or hurtful so I know that they are having fun and both come back for more chase and tumble when it is the other guys turn to be the winner.  LOL so cute and good to see after a week and a half of a sick sleepy kitty.
