Hi gang, I just had my brother/sister siamese spayed/neutered. Any suggestions on how to keep the cone of shame on them? They've slipped out if it several times already and it's only day one? Second how to feed water them while the cone of shame is on for the next seven to ten days? Thanks for your help and experience?

They made a mess with the cone on. Day one directions were to take a tlbs of wet food and some water while still in crate. The mixture was everywhere. It also stunk. I don't think they injested anything.

you can cut the cone down a bit. all my cats but one had it on for the first 48 hours . my black cat lex would constantly lick himself so he was in it for a week, along with being caged(.6ft tall enclosure)
anyway if the cone is short enough they'll have no problem drinking. mine usually use their feet to drink anyway. good luck!!

Hmm, none of mine have ever been in a cone, spays or neuters.

When they remove the cones, do they become fixated on their sutures? lf so, they should be in them until they've healed. Most of our cats left everything alone, so if they're not harming themselves, it might be okay to give them supervised time without the cones until you know you can remove them for good.

Right now iv actually tried a big bowl for drinking and the paper plate. He is pushing the plate around and basically eatting off the floor. His cone is still on. My lil girl however chewed through the cone. Ran off an is hiding under a sofa. She has no interest in eatting/drinking. Haven't tried to get her again to put cone on. When I check on her she's not doing anything. I'm trying to wait a bit to see I she's stressed less.

While there are some vets who standardly give the cone to wear, but the vets I use with my rescue do not for spays/neuters unless that particular cat won't leave the suture area alone.

Try just taking them off and watch to see that they don't do more than smell and lick the area for a bit, then ignore it.

Most cats do fine without a cone.

I think the vet techs should put a cone on cats while they're still groggy after surgery. They get
use to it easier and don't freak out.

Try elevating bowls. If that doesn't work then get a wide sauce pan and fill almost to the top. They'll just lay the
cone right in the water and press down enough till the water rises so they can drink. Yes it is messy. Just put food on flat dinner plate.
I feed wet and take cone off for supervised eating and grooming.

Day 3 is the itchest. Mine pulled all her stitches out on day 3. Took back to vet and got restitched and she wore
the cone for sure then.

My vet said neosporin was good to put on incision for faster healing.

Do they bother the stitches when the cones are off?  You can take the cones off while they eat or drink.

I have never had to use a cone with any of my spays or neuters.  If they're not messing with their stitches, I'd just leave the cones off.

Id like to thank everyone for their advice. I did elevate food and water this did help with feeding. My daughter and I have also hand feed them which was cute. I tried with the cone off and our female immediately begins to lick herself. Thanks again everyone!
