I'm looking for some advice on my newly adopted cat.

He is my first cat in 10 years and I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him in a pet store (now now it was a showcase for our local SPCA getting some attention to adoptable cats, there was still an application and waiting period to go through) and our first week with our new boy was great, slow moving but we were not going to rush him.

Today however we discovered some new things about the new boy and these were that he has a Serious roundworm parasitic infection (treated and monitoring) which he contracted from the shelter and next was that he is completely intact. The last one is the biggest problem, we live in a condo that requires that all pets be sterilized. I picked him because the shelter assured me he was in fact neutered, up to date on all shots including leukemia...

After his check up for the vet this afternoon (to treat the worms) we were told that he also has an undescended testicle and were quoted the surgery be $400.

im at a loss as to what to do, I have adopted him with the understanding that he was fixed and now am told that he is not has me stressing out as right now I can not afford an additional costs (making him nearly an $1000 cat...not kidding here) I'm a full time student with a family working part-time.

what would you do in this situation if you were found in it?

Did they give you any paperwork?  When I adopted mine from the SPCA, I got a ream of paperwork, including certificates of spay/neuter, reports of health status, tests and meds given before adoption, etc.  If you have any proof of what health status the cat was supposed to be in, you should have some recourse for them to make good on their representations to you.  Poor kitty.

we did get a bunch of paper work, he was sent to a college as a "teaching tool" for the vet techs, however some of the paperwork is written in "code" so I don't quite understand most of it.

I gave the originals to the vet and kept a copy for ourselves.

the SPCA looked over the paperwork before we adopted him and said everything was in order and that is when I made sure to ask if the cat was neutered.

After talking with them today they told me "they were under the impression he was neutered".

Seems to me they should make good on the representations they made to you.

Hi,just let me say Congratulations on being rescued by that little boy! The problem with the SPCA is they are overunned:rock: and under severe monetary shortage with the pet population and irresponsible owners who dump these kitties off without spaying in the first place.Unfortunately they will probably offer to take him back instead of paying and then in the ole vacuum death chamber he goes.Sorry to be so honest but that's what thousands of shelters have to do everyday.I wish I had an answer. There might be a vet or rescue org. that might help with cost if SPCA won't have him spayed. Please try before you give him up,Im sure many years of companion ship and unconditional love will more than make up for your financial misfortune and his life situation misfortune .

Congrats on your new little kitty.  I would definitely call the SPCA and tell them.  Most of our SPCA's and Humane Societies will not let someone adopt an animal without it being spayed or neutered.  The parasite infection is quite common and should clear up in a few weeks.  Make sure you take in fecal samples when asked to check the progress.

I hope the SPCA will help you out and follow through on the neuter.

well the update is that after the first initial call I was then directed to the director who at first was far from understanding, in fact it was a rather unpleasant phone call and I was treated like a child and told to refrain from using attitude (I was in the company of a few other people and they confirmed that while I was clearly upset my attitude was in check and I was rather more clam about it then they would have been) we have got to no results and I asked that since I was about to go to class…(but I needed a break before I exploded)

he (the shelter director) called me back 10 minutes later and had a completely different tone, they are now going to cover the surgery and even apologised!!

so the news is great!! he goes in Tuesday and I bring him home on Weds…phew!!

SO happy this seems like it was resolved!!! Glad all around - that you persisted, that you saved and now love this guy, and that all's actually going to get fixed! (Pun intended).

Enjoy him!! He's obviously more than comfortable around you, judging by his very vulnerable, loving (and adorable) sleeping position!
