So my girls have sorta just came fussier cats ATM I give them 1 cup of whisked biscuits a day I don't know how good it is for my cats but they love it and I'm told dry food is there complete dietary needs I also give them wet which varies on what I buy they seem to get sick of eating the same thing they only get wet food at most every 2nd night ATM I feed them tinned sardines in oil or tinned prawns they love it but if I can find an affordable healthy wet and dry food for them would be appreciated it's so hard trying to work out what foods are actually good for them

Welcome to The Cat Site and it is good that you want to feed your cats the best possible food.

I take it you don't live in the USA, maybe Australia, so I'm not sure what products you have available.

But here goes: "Biscuit" I think is dry food and while no doubt 'nutritionally complete' has many ingredients that cats don't need, such as rice, corn, wheat.    Wet food is better for cats than dry food.  Look for 'grain' free foods.  Then read the ingredients, which I believe are required in most countries to be listed in order of predominance.  So the first few ingredients should be protein/meat based, followed by peas/corn (if any).

Here is a recent article about what makes the best canned food.  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/what-makes-the-best-canned-cat-food    The principles apply regardless what country you live in.

A cup of dry food seems to me like a lot of calories; how many cats eat that one cup, and what is their weight like?

Also, and I'm coming from the perspective of a cat owner whose cats have UTIs, but:   too much fish isn't good for cats, especially male cats.  And shouldn't be fed to a cat who is predisposed to UTIs.

There are many articles in the Nutrition forum http://www.thecatsite.com/t/248990/tcs-resources-thread-feline-nutrition-articles-and-threads which would be a good place to learn about the general principles of nutrition.

And this Forum is another great place!

My cats have sorta really turned off wet food and with there biscuits they get up 2 a cup a day I use a half cup measurent which I only add if the bowl is empty so someday half cup is enough but yer upto a cup they weigh about 4.5 kg I sorta worried they might be abit weight but there are big boned and very active when they want to be but I'm happy to take advice on changes I want the best for them and I was feeding them a sing serve whisk as pouch every second night, or sometimes dine or fancy feast but I always shared the single serve between the two because they wouldn't eat a full one they've always enjoyed there biscuits then I had a week or two when I was low on money so on the nights when I gave them wet food it was tuna with a some sardines or prawns mixed them they turned of it for a week so I tried to give them a pouch the next wet food night they didn't touch it so just the last week I gave them 2 sardines each on one night, then just today for wet food I gave them about 2 table spoons of tinned prawns, I did want to try applaws cat food again they enjoyed it last night but it's $20 and only last a fortnight and that's a lot with cat litter and biscuits, and flee treatments and I don't want to spend that money of they won't eat it all I don't like wasting foo

Is free feeding bad for cats I do it because I'm never home at a regular time but I only give them half a biscuits at a time and will only give them the second half if there bowls are running low so i just want to know of this free feeding is okay saying that max biscuits thy get a day is 1 cup each they don't each much food so the most they get is half an single serve ever 2nd night but if they don't eat it all I might go more days before next wet food night or when I feel guilty I haven't been home much

A lot of us on this site are against feeding dry food. It's unhealthy for cats for a lot of reasons, putting them at risk for serious health problems later in life. It was created for human convenience, not with cat nutrition in mind. If you have to feed dry, using a high-quality grain-free is the best option. The more grain-free wet you can feed, the better.

There are automatic feeders for wet food if you can't be home regularly.

The Ziwipeak is a premium brand. If you're shopping for budget food, Fancy Feast classic line or Friskies pate are good choices. I don't know if they're carried in Australia, though.

We do have those brands, but my cats don't really like wet food except in the rare occasion today for Australia Day I gave them home brand tinned tuna, ziwipeak is not affordable on my budget at this time so what cat biscuits and wet food is best for them health wise I want biscuits that have all there nutrition needs as they prefer biscuits and they haven't seemed to have any issues with it accept when try eat to much and make themselves sick but that's my fault for not monitoring how much I feed them close enough on those rare occassions
