Please help me.  I am embarrassed by what I am about to say but I have an urgent situation.

I found fleas on my two cats yesterday.  I had (I thought) some flea medicine (the little Advantage plastic squirt vials).  I've used this kind of application several times so I know the method is to squirt the contents of the small plastic vial into and under the hair on the back (nape) of the cat's neck.

I did that to both cats, yesterday.

Today, I noticed that one of them had become a lot more lethargic than usual and was spending most of her time on her  cat bed.

It dawned on me that I needed to read the package for indications.

I got the package and discovered that I had used ear mite medicine on the nape of their necks and it was not flea medicine.

Obviously I am very sad and embarrassed but what I need urgently is to be told what to do.

Of course, we washed and washed, with soap and water, as long as we could, the areas on their neck and napes.

What should we do now?

Please distribute this as an urgent appeal for help.

I don't think anyone here can tell you what to do except call a vet and explain what happened along with the active ingredients of the ear mite medication. I have no idea what the effect of the dosage of the med applied that way will do. Hopefully a vet will be able to tell you if it is life threatening or not. You could also try calling the ASPCA Pet Poison Hotline.

How is your cat now. I think to that you need to ask the vet or the poison control center. I hope your cat will be okay.

Call a 24/7 emergency vet clinic and ask to speak to a vet or vet tech. If you don't have a clinic like this in your city, you could always call long distance to an emergency in another city and then ask your questions.

Thank you for your concern, everyone.

We took the cats to the veterinary clinic.  The vet showed no alarm and just told us to use Dawn liquid and to thoroughly wash away the very-oily ear mite medicine.  In fact, the vet laughed at my mistake (laughed with me after I knew the cats were okay).

He wanted us to thoroughly wash away the mite medicine, not because of any danger, but because, he said, the needed flea medicine application might not get through all of the otherwise oily hair and skin.

From here, it's flea treatment: He gave them cortisone shots and gave us to apply, a "flea-a-cide", brand name "Revolution" (selamectin) and sold us a can of aerosol bug spray "Mycodex" for the cats' habitats.

So now it's just dealing with the flea issue.

Thank goodness!! The cats are okay.

What a dummy ... me
