Let me start off by saying that I *know* Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys are not very good food.  However, at one point my cat Cleo was just not eating, and the vet said to try anything including canned tuna or chicken to get him eating again.  They were they only thing he would touch.  He got much better.  However, he is 17 and his kidneys are starting to be not so great.  The old vet moved away, and the new vet wants him on a lower sodium, lower potassium food (although she acknowledged that actually eating is more important because he is losing weight again).  His kidneys are getting worse.

He will not touch the prescription food.  The only other food he will eat is Friskies Filet's although that's not really any better for him.  I think it might be the texture.  It's not a pate, but the chunks or flakes are pretty small.  Regular Fancy Feast "flaked" doesn't do it for him.

Does anyone have any ideas of something better for him, but similar?

Have you tried the Fancy Feast Classic line?  Out of all of them, it's the best quality - grain free, and the first ingredients are real meat.  It's also a pate, it sounds like what you're looking for.

Yes, I've tried that he won't eat it.   Pate is too smooth or something for him.  I think it needs very small distinct chunks or something.

Is he on any phosphorus binders to protect his kidneys? I've been there where you are, and eating something is the priority. I bought foods according to the phosphorus content when she was eating on her own.

I'm assuming you're familiar with www.felinecrf.org.

Merrick makes some that are small chunks. Grain free, "Purrfect Bistro" - although it does have peas, potatoes, etc. in it.  My cats really like these.  I try not to give it to them too frequently because of the additional ingredients they really don't need but overall, not a bad choice.  Being that Cleo is 17, I'd just concentrate on finding something which would be eaten - although I can't comment on whether or not this food is appropriate for a cat with kidney issues since I haven't had that experience yet.

The vet hasn't said anything about phosphorus binders.  She has said she wants to be proactive. What she mentioned to me was concerns about sodium in his food.   I am familiar with www.felinecrf.org.  If nothing else, he's switching to the lowest phosphorus and sodium version of Fancy Feast Medleys.

I'm also considering waiting until he's finished with antibiotics to try switching his food again.  He had a low grade urinary tract infection and a less than stellar white blood cell count that was even lower than the last one.  So 2 weeks of antibiotics for him.
