I have a ginger kitty that keeps popping up in my yard even in the cold temps..........I have tried to put food out for it, but once I go outside to put food down, kitty is gone and I don't see it until the next day.  It comes around the deck and will look in the window, but when it sees me move, it runs........My question is, will a truly feral kitty come to the window and peek in?  I do have my bird feeders out everywhere, so maybe it is just checking out the mouse population..........I am stymied.....Any ideas?

It may be a shy stray or a neighbor's cat.  He's brave enough to come to the window and peer in and a true feral would probably not do that.  That might also explain why he won't hang around for the food you put out.

He may be scooping out the bird feeders for birds, too.

I thought both of those also.....His white fur is quite dirty and he seems to come from the wooded creek.  A neighbor puts out chicken and pork chops for the coyotes and foxes, much to our dismay and the other day I saw GK coming by with a big chicken thigh in its mouth.....I live on  a semi rural road, so I pretty well know who owns what animal...Thanks for the reply....I was thinking too that it wasn't altogether feral....I will keep working on it.....

Often true ferals are not dirty.  They are meticulously clean.  Strays are often dirty with matted fur.  Since he is peering into your window, he may be curious yet afraid.  I would be very worried about the coyotes and such that are being fed nearby.  You could try to trap him and bring him inside or right to a vet.  If he is hungry, trapping him might be pretty easy if you bait it with yummy chicken, tuna or sardines.

Thanks for caring for this Ginger Kitty.

I am trying to establish a feeding pattern..I put food out after I saw it yesterday but it never came back............We have a TNR colony about 1/2 mile from here in the forest preserve.   I always wonder if he came from there....NO ear tipped, tho........Unfortunately I have to trap when the time is right and at the moment we are dealing with caretaking for two elderly parents so my time is not my own.........And YES, I can't believe the neighbors are still throwing out pork chops and chicken.....We already spoke to them about it........I AM surprised that ginger kitty has not been preyed upon yet.......Thanks for your help.
