It is very possible that she has a bladder infection.  No I do not think that she just exploded.  I give 2 of my bladder kitties extra water with their premium canned food and do not have any problems with it.  Sometimes cats just get bladder infections no matter what precautions you are taking.

How much water are you adding? Diluting the food with water too much can cause the urine pH level to go up, which means bacterial infections are easier to start.

Unfortunately since this is a change in behavior you should take her to the vet.

Have you tried testing the urine pH with pH strips? That way you can get some feedback on the dietary changes.

Where did you hear putting water in canned food affects urine? I put a little water in my cats canned food so I mix it into mush because one of my cats is missing a few teeth and this allows her to eat it easier.

i thought extra water was good

she did not have a bladder infection ever before

ONE THING I did notice is her litter box was not as easy to get to as it usually is but i thought she would just squeeze through anyway?

THis has been scaring me all day because i felt i did everything right with her and spent so much money on her and thought i was giving her the best possible health ever i hahve a history with her so i almost started to cry over it

her dry uti food made her fat the wet food she was not as fat

any idea how to clean it up? I put the blanket in the washer and then stprayed the futon with lots and lots of natures mircle

then i put plastic bags over top pee goes right into the futon and she peed a LOT

if it was a uti in the past she would hardly pee with a uti i think? and she would poo in corners

her fellaway collar also expired so i got her a new plug in

she will be 8 soon

To be honest, I think you are doing the right thing with the water. The biggest help in my opinion with UTI's is water, it keeps flushing it out. Dry, even UTI dry food, well I cannot see how that helps.  I would say tho before you go shopping for medicinal food, I would get her tested for a UTI at the vet. You said that the litter tray was harder to get to, this could very well be the culprit. You could place it in an easy reach place and even buy another. Some cat's like two, one for each business!

Cleaning a mattress, steam cleaners are good even tho it means you'll make it wetter, but the heat cleans the bacteria. Dettol, washing powder, bicarb of soda are also good, but has to be thoroughly done and rinsed, then blotted loads of times with a towel, keep pressing really hard!  Don't know where you are but if you can leave it outside for a couple of days to dry if its warm, that's useful as a wet mattress can go mouldy. If not, dry with a hair dryer or a little heater fan, oh and dehumidifiers can speed drying up considerably. If you are worried your cat will do it again, get a mattress protector as this will help cleaning up next time much easier!! Good luck and please don't be upset, I think you've done so much for your cat, kudos!

The extra water is good, and I in fact added water to my cat's food. I only wanted to point out that it is possible to go overboard and tip the scales the other way. I added 2 tablespoons to 2 ounces of food at first, felt it was too much, and then reduced to 1 tablespoon.

bugmankeith, I found the information a long time ago and it would be too hard to relocate the information now. But if water is pH 7 and urine is slightly acidic, somewhere around 6.5, then adding water would bump the urine pH up because the urine would be less concentrated.
