I have a kitty named mittens neutered and think he has fip he has the swollen for 4 months now I took him to vet they drew the yellow fluid from his abdomen I didn't have the money to test it vet said make him comfy till he goes his belly swells and went down some before but this time it hasn't gone down any we keep him kenneled overnight because he peed the bed but he's always Hungry and I let him out during the day and he tries climbing on the bed I have to help him I read the kitties need more protein so I just got some fresh pet food with real chicken and other natural ingredients hope this helps him I have 9 other cats with no symptoms he's the only one and he was outside with others maybe he got it from a stray cat or animal or if he ate a mouse would they get it from them I don't want to give up on him but I will put him down if he won't get up or eat till then I rub his belly and he paws my side till bedtime

So sorry to hear about Mittens.  FIP is caused by the mutation of a virus that most cats already have.  I don't think they know what causes the mutation but stress has something to do with it.  He's probably in a lot of pain, so you are being kind to think about relieving his misery.  You will know when it is time.

I am relatively sure it wasn't caused by the mouse or being outside but if he was under a lot of stress, that might have pushed the issue.  Do you have enough room for nine cats to be comfortable?  If you don't have the actual physical space, you can add cat trees or shelves so there is more vertical space.

Thank you for taking care of them all and of Mittens.

Sounds like you have a good set up.  Glad to hear they are all fixed.  Can you work something out with the vet for the test?  It may give you some information on how to make him comfortable.

Beautiful cats.  Poor Mittens - please don't let him suffer too much.  And please don't think about it as "giving up" - it is about bringing him peace.

Bless you for helping them all.
