Hey guys, if you have used this food, can you tell me if this white stuff is something to worry about. I've been using the rabbit formula for a few days and it doesn't look like this. It doesn't quite look like mold. I'm thinking maybe it's supplement power that isn't dissolved or something. What do you think?

Hard to say what this might be. I would call or send the company an email with this pic and ask them to provide you with some feedback. In the meantime, I would not feed this just in case, but perhaps put it in the fridge until you hear back from the company.

Could it be congealed fat?  Or does it actually feel powdery?  It's hard to tell the texture in a pic.  I haven't tried Instinct, but I have seen a little congealed fat on top of canned foods.

FWIW, I recently emailed Nature Variety a question using the form on their website because it's one of a few brands I may be interested in trying, and they emailed me back within a couple of days, so at least they are responsive if you do decide to contact them.

IMO it's fat and normal for their venison. All of their flavors have a slightly different look or consistency. Their lamb is similar to the venison but slightly different color, the rabbit crumbles easier, and the chicken/duck looks like what you would expect.

I feed my cats Instinct Venison, Rabbit, Lamb, and Chicken. They did not like the Duck but IIRC it was similar to the Chicken.

I have fed their lamb and it often has the same thing.  I just assumed that it was fat.  I think with the simpler foods that are mainly just meat with supplements and have a high percentage of meat you will sometimes see this.  I actually see it fairly often with the lamb probably because it is a fattier meat than the venison.  I have went ahead and fed it to the kitties with no issues.

Yes, I think you guys are right, it must just be part of the food separating. I just opened up a can of the lamb flavor and it has even more of it and I see the ingredients don't have any gums or things that would keep it together in the can. And the rabbit version does have ground flaxseed and lecithin, which would help keep it from separating too much, which is probably why I haven't seen it in the rabbit cans.
