My cat recently got into a fight after he was out all night. He wouldn't come in called him for most of the night. Now he is limping and not really himself. I've cleaned his wounds and put stuff on them. But he's still limping around like he's drugged. He's eating. What else can I do? I can't afford to take him to a vet. Any ideas.

He really needs to see a vet ! It sounds like he's got abscesses, infections from cat bites and he needs antibiotics. The longer you leave it the worse it will get and then it will end up costing a lot lot more

I would make sure his wounds are properly draining and if not do some scab removal to get the wound to drain usually they are teeth marks so there will be two. If the wounds are draining or they are not those types of wound and he still is not acting normally he may have something more seriously wrong with him and will probably needs a vet. I had a cat who got out and would sometimes get himself in trouble and he would be very inactive for a few days after being beat up by the neighbor's cat.

His wounds are not that type and are healing fine. I just think he's still recooperating. There aren't teeth marks. Just a couple scratches. I am doing what I can as I have no money for a vet. But he seems to be getting better every day. Just wanted to know if there was anything else I could do. Can you give him anything for pain like children's aspirin? I'm giving him fish oil once a day.

I take it he is not neutered?

This is the biggest/main cause of male cat fights. I am not going to preach about how he needs to be neutered, and asap, but the fact is, he will get into many fights as long as he is intact, and they can get seriously ugly, as this fighting is vicious and not meant to simply intimidate, but to kill, which means lots of damage can be done.

Cat bites basically always become infected causing an abcess, you will see  a raised area that is sore and hot to touch (very warm) due to the inflammation.

Usually they will burst on their own, allowing the infectious fluid to drain from his body and heal, but sometimes they do not burst on their own and need to be lanced by a vet only. To allow it to drain.

When this happens the wound needs to be kept moist, you can do this with an antibiotic ointment, not cream, the ointment stays on better.

If he were to go to the vet, he would likely put him on antibiotics, because the fact is, if the bite wound/infection is unable to drain and heal on it's own, it gets the cat extremely sick, meaning big vet bills rather than taking him now, paying simply the office visit and for antibiotics he will send home with you.

Just cleaned his cuts and put ointment on them. They are healing good. There almost not there anymore. He's just achy. There is no abscess. I checked.

Human medicine is probably not a good choice in any case without a vet's rec. I would search around his body to make sure he does not have bite wounds because they can hide. I understand you can't afford a vet and I've been there too but if you can afford the office visit you can request the vet write you a script for human amoxicillion which you can get at the human pharmacy for $4 in liquid form. My vet has prescribed that for wound injuries before.

Please do NOT give him any thing like aspirin this is toxic to cats and can kill them. It causes liver failure in them. If he has any open wounds you could try cleaning them with some warm salt water solution.

I just hope there's nothing building up under the scabs. Claws are filthy too.

I just broke the scabs and cleaned everything. They looked good. What do claws have to do with anything?

Thanks I'm glad I'm not the only one. He wants to go outside but were not letting him so that's a good sign he's indoor outdoor. And I haven't had any problems with him fighting in quiet a while.

Meaning cat scratches can become infected as well as bite wounds.

For some darn reason though, bites basically always get infected but scratches don't always.

OK well I've looked all over him and just found scratches. If he had an abcess its not there anymore. His lip is a little scratched up but there healing well. He's just tired and achy. And all the wounds are not very hot to the touch. He will heal it just takes time.

Please do not give your cat any human medicine, most of them are toxic to cats.  Cats don't metabolize drugs the same way people do.  The best you can do with no vet is just to make sure the wounds stay clean.  DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on them as it is very caustic.

Why can't I use hydrogen peroxide on him? I already have and always have. What else can I use?

Human meds may cause harm not only because used on the wound but because they lick it and a lot of meds should not be eaten. Salt water is the safest if you do not have meds from the vet.  Dissolve it into boiled water and allow to cool. Good luck!

Abscesses usually don't show up for a few days, I've had many ferals get them and come through them fine, but they are sore for a long time and they burst open and drain, leaving a nasty looking sore. I've called my vet many times and he has sold me antibiotics without bringing the cat in, I tell him they are ferals and not my cat but I want to help. They are stressed out enough without a vet visit! Not to mention I can't even pick them up. Good luck and bless you for caring for him like you have!

I have used hydrogen peroxide and a vet recommended it, you can also use1/20 diluted herbicleanse for wounds that are very tender like burns. You are on the right track....
