My almost 9 month old un-neutered male has either just started spraying tonight or has a urinary problem. He's gotten in each one of the litter boxes and peed and peed on the wall of the fireplace. He's been very restless tonight, walking throught the house and meowing a lot. He also keeps waving his butt at the walls, that's why I thought maybe he's marking. His pee smells very strong, but has for a while now. I've never had a male that was still entact at this age and don't know what to expect. I've been planning on getting him neutered since he was 4 months old but something's always come up that requires the money. Anyone with experience with un-neutered males, is this normal marking behavior or do you think he has a problem?

I think that this is normal behavior for an intact male.  If he isn't neutered very soon it will become an ingrained habit that may not stop.  He is probably wanting out to find a female to mate with, there may be one in heat close enough for him to have picked up on the scent.

Yep sounds pretty normal for an intact male at this age.  Best thing to do is to neuter him before it becomes a bad habit.

I agree.  He's well past the age where he can be neutered.  There are low cost places that spay and neuter in nearly everywhere - just a matter of looking for them.

I am quoting Denise link above again in case you may not have noticed it !! Please, please get your cat neutered quickly. IF he is screaming though, and looking like he is straining - small dribble of urine. Then, get him to a vet ASAP. His urethra could be blocking up due to an infection/crystals. This is a dangerous situation and would need immediate medical attention.

There are many low cost clinics for spay/neuters. Please check the link above.

Thanks, he doesn't seem like he's in pain, I think he's just maturing. I'm hopeing to get him neuter next week. Although my glass bathroom counter top just exploded into a million pieces, so maybe the universe doesn't want him neutered, lol.

The Monster is getting neutered tomorrow morning! Hopeing it will stop his spraying. I've sprayed everything rear high with Pee-B-Gone.

Believe me, the universe DOES want him neutered. :lol3: AND, excellent news that today is the day. Let us know how it all goes. :cross: :vibes: :vibes: In the meanwhile here is an excellent article on how to rid the house of the soiled urine spots so your cat won't have the temptation to remark those areas. http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-remove-cat-urine

Your cat is still quite young (9 mo.) and the neutering will help with the marking behavior. It is a harder habit to break the older they get and the more ingrained the behavior becomes. Also, it will take about two weeks or so for all of his hormones to come down.

Also, want to mention that some cats, neutered cats, do stand up in the litter box when peeing. I have one that does that and I have plastic placemats taped to my wall behind each cat pan to catch any over spray. ;) That is not a marking behavior - just the way some kitties pee. I did take my cat into the vet for a urinalysis when he started standing and he did have a little infection going on. Treated the infection and he stopped standing up so far. Still, though, he has this tendency.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer in neutering. The other 6 cats are fixed, as are both the dogs. The money was just never there, when we took in Monster when he was a tiny baby I had two different people tell me they'd help me with his neutering when it came time. Well that didn't happen. Luckily a friend of mine was able to get me a low cost voucher and he's in getting neutered right now. All of my litter boxes have high sides, I have big cats and they need big potties. My oldest girl had chronic UTIs for years so I how all about that, unfortunately.

Monster's neuter went well. He was a little loopy when I picked him up, but he seems to be feeling fine now. Glad it's finally done.

Yeah - I think we all know about that when it comes to having kitties. :sigh: I tried to find the HIGHEST litter box on the market. Still, Presley, could pee over the back. :lol3: Hence, the plastic placemats that hang to the inside. Easy, breezy wipe downs.

YAY!:clap: Glad all is well with Monster. Let's hope he goes from being Monster to Saint!! :winkblue: Keep us posted and good luck!! :vibes::vibes:

Monster's still doing fine, I'm a wreck though. At 1am a hose on my water heater burst. At 3:30am it tried to come on with the valves closed and sounded like a burst pipe in the wall. So I rushed out to the end of the driveway to check the water meter in my pjs in 11 degree weather only to have to come back inside and pull the breaker on the water heater.

Oh no.   It's seems when the things that need money start they just keep coming and it's getting harder and harder for regular working people to come up with the money.  This frigid cold weather is making everything much harder to deal with also.  I am glad you got your kitty neutered and hopefully he will easily stop spraying.

Oh no on the water heater AND having to run outside in PJs in these frigid temps. I hope you get it all sorted out. :cross: Glad that Monster is still doing good! :vibes::vibes:

Waited all day for the plumber, who said he'd be over "sometime this morning", so I called after 4 pm and was told he can't make it until tomorrow. So I had to call in to work for tomorrow and still haven't gotten to take a shower today. Feeling frustrated and scummy.
