My big boy cat has feline herpes, and he also has a history of minor partial urinary blockage as well as a urinary blockage where he had to have a short hospital stay to get unblocked (no need for the reconfiguration surgery so far).  Most of his herpes symptoms have resolved with 500 mg of L-lysine per day, but he still has one watery eye.  He has been good urinary-wise since being put on canned c/d.

I read on the forums here about Bovine Lactoferrin, and am interested in adding that to his diet along with the L-lysine, to see if that resolves his eye.  He would be a much happier boy if I wasn't wiping his eye all the time. ;-)

I am wondering if the Bovine Lactoferrin is safe for cats with a serious history of urinary blockage problems.  Any input on this would be very greatly appreciated!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Yep, got the PM, but thought I'd answer here too. The bovine lactoferrin will NOT affect crystal kitties. I'm using it for all of my kitties, and three of the boys previously had crystal issues - and Spooky (female) did too. Struvites in two boys and Spooky, and calcium oxalate in Lazlo. No issues. It doesn't affect mineral metabolism other than iron, and it doesn't affect the urine pH.

Just an update....

Quincy has been on the Jarrow bovine lactoferrin 125 mg (1/2 the contents of a capsule) each morning for a couple of weeks now.  (He is also still on 500 mg of lysine each evening.)  Even in this very short amount of time, he has had a *dramatic* decrease in the drippy eye!  We were wiping his eye every hour or so before.  Now there's so little watery discharge from his eye we really don't need to wipe it at all, although we still do it from habit every now and then.  But really, instead of having a big tear running down his face all the time, he now has maybe a little dampness at the corner of his eye.  It has not had any negative urinary effects at all, he's still peeing like a champ. ;-)

For anyone with a herpes kitty, I would highly, highly recommend trying the bovine lactoferrin.  It's not cheap, but it has been worth every penny!

Awesome news!
I completely agree.  I still wipe Molly's eyes every morning but it's so much less discharge now and so much easier to keep under control.
