Hello, I'm new here and read today several great posts and replies regarding cats that lick themselves to baldness (particularly the belly, back of legs, back of tail).  So many cats have this malady and are evaluated for allergies (flea, food, environmental), thyroid disorders, parasites, etc.  Seldom are there reports of methods that have totally resolved the issue  (other than temporary methods like steroid shots; or in a few cases, changing the diet).

Has anyone ever found that their cat who exhibited this syndrome was allergic to a particular type or brand of litter (or something else like particular foods, carpeting, fabric, cleansers/sprays, etc.)?  What are the major culprits?

My cat's (Scooter) problem is probably psychogenic (anxiety, and perhaps psychosis).  She was a feral captured during pregnancy, who is how 4 years old and a one-year history of excessive licking/baldness on her belly and back of legs and tail).  She has tested negatively to food allergies, thyroid issues, parasites/worms, or flea bites.  Her Vet (who is a very good vet) believes her issues are due to anxiety (she also races around the house and bumps into things to the point of exhaustion and moist sweat, and she chases invisible insects).  She is adorable, but her "irritation" makes her miserable;  makes me miserable to see her like this, too.  She has started taking a drug called amitriptyline twice daily now (Elavil) which appears to calm her down.  Too early to tell if her licking/baldess will resolve.

I am wondering if anyone participating on this site has a cat that exhibits these problems and is now doing well (the problems were resolved), and if so, would you mind sharing how it was resolved?  Thank you!

Hi! Welcome to TCS!

I've asked a mod to move this to a thread where it would help you best.

To me, it does sound like allergies. could be something in the food or litter.. but I have no experience with this. I am sure someone will come along to help!

My kitty DeeJay has Psychogenic Alopecia.  I don't give her meds for it because medications traumatize her so she only gets them when absolutely necessary.  You have been given a couple of really good links in this thread.
