My baby Turtle (female age 4 1/2) is just getting over some pretty nasty infections in her kidney and pancreas. One of the problems was she lost 3.5 pounds (putting her at only 6.5) and wouldn't eat much. The vet gave her Mirtazapine at first, but she had a major reaction to it (huge eyes, fidgety, wouldn't stop meowing or leave my side, rapid breathing) so they switched her to Cyproheptdine. That helped for a while, and she gained back 2 pounds. She also takes Prozac (2.5 mg once a day) and I learned quickly not to give it with the stimulant, it caused her to be agitated.

Lately she's been doing her no-eating thing again. I have 3 kinds of dry food out all the time, and I feed everyone wet food once a day in the evening. When it's time for "dinner" she will come running like everyone else. She takes a sniff of what's in her bowl (I've taken great pains to find out which is her favorite so she'll eat it), flies down the stairs and up into the 7' cat tree's top, almost knocking it over. Then she zooms around the house like her tail is on fire. It's the only time of day she acts like that.

Since I giver her the Prozac at night, I figured today I'd give her the Cyproheptadine in the morning, so they wouldn't interact. That turned out to be a mistake - She is meowing excessively and not leaving my side. Fortunately there is no rapid breathing or dilated eyes and she's not fidgety, but she's loud and insistent. Not a good thing because I work from home and clients can hear her in the background.

Does anyone know of some natural appetite stimulant for cats? Other than a variety of food (which they have). I can't have her lose weight again, but I also can't have her yelling constantly while I'm working.

Thanks!

The behavior of acting interested in eating but not eating is pretty classic for a kitty with nausea.  Is she taking anything for nausea?  Most vets give Cerenia now.  Pepcid might also help because it controls the amount of acid in the stomach.  I really don't know of any natural appetite stimulants.  Both of the ones that are used are actually using the side effect of a medication for the appetite stimulant effect.

What dose of Cypro are you giving?  My Kitty DeeJay is on it longterm and I give her anywhere from 1/4 to a whole 4mg tablet to encourage her to eat.  Have you seen this site?  http://www.felinecrf.org/persuading_cat_to_eat.htm  Getting to the bottom of what is causing your cat not to eat, whether it be nausea from the kidney issues or pancreatitis or whatever else it may be will help increase her appetite.

The prescribed amount was 2mg twice a day, spaced 12 hours apart. I only give her 1 mg once a day and he's agitated for most of those 12 hours! Yesterday I gave her 1 mg at noon and she was yelling and following me around until about 9:30 pm. And that's from just a quarter of the dose I'm supposed to give her!

The only medicine she is on permanently is 2.5 mgs of Prozac (she's nervous and she pulls her fur out in great chunks) once a day. I have 2 other cats on the same dose (Louie because I think he has separation anxiety, so it mellows him out, and Duck for aggression and jealousy of the other cats). Turtle seems to do fine with that one.

Thanks for the link, I'm going to check it out now. And the idea about nausea is one I hadn't considered before. I will definitely ask the vet about it, thanks!! Any other advice or suggestion is greatly appreciated. :-)
