Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help figure out what is wrong with my cat, I am planning on taking him in the vet if he does not get better, but it is currently late in the night, and the vet is not  open at this hour so I need to at least wait till tomorrow. My 3 year old orange tabby cat has not ate or drank water in the past 1-2 days, and he threw up his dry food yesterday. He has a bloated stomach and is very weak, and has been hiding and sleeping all day today and yesterday. Yesterday he was meowing a very strange meow at times, and has kept rather quite today. I think he got sick from new wet food that was left out for few days when I was out of town and became sick two days ago on Saturday and today is Monday night. I have tried to feed my kitty, Kobe, yellowfin tuna in oil, tuna in water, chicken, turkey, fresh wet food and he has not ate any of it. I feed him very small amounts of water with a small cup putting a little bit on his lips to lick off (very long and slow process of feeding my cat water), and he seemed to respond really well to the water and got more energy, then about 20 minutes he threw up the water. I am very scared about my kitty being dehydrated, and a couple hours later I feed him very small amounts of tuna water over the past three hours (He seemed to like the tuna water a lot more then the regular water) and he has held it down and has more energy and is more awake and responsive. I have been laying with my cat for the entire night and I'm really scared for his health and his unusual behavoir. I plan on taking him to the vet as soon as possible when they open but if anyone could PLEASE help me out and let me know what possibly could be wrong with him, it would really help ease my mind until I have access to the vet.

Thank you very much <3

I am sorry to read about your kitty's current situation .. He sounds really uncomfortable.

There could a few different things going on but a couple of things in particular come to mind such as an intestinal blockage which can cause a lot of discomfort and food to come back up. Is your kitty still eliminating okay or has not had a bowel movement? He could also be suffering from an intestinal infection or toxic substance from food he has eaten recently. Its good that you are planning on taking him to the vet today and that you are aware of the importance of keeping him hydrated as much as possible.

Feeding fish now and then is okay but a steady diet is not recommended, especially for male cats as it can cause urinary tract infections as well as allergies in some cats. I hope that your kitty is feeling better soon. Best of luck at the vets and let us know what turns out.

Hi there, thank your for your kind response.

As far as Kobe going to the bathroom, on Saturday he peed on the bedding (wasn't able to make to his litter box) , and then went number two in his litter box on Saturday, and then threw up Sunday morning  and has not eliminated since then.  Is there anything I can do for him to help comfort him as he does seem to be a lot of pain,  although his unusual meowing stopped today. He is currently sleeping in my bed and is a little more responsive and wagging his tail after having some tuna water in his body.  Right now he does not drink water on his own. I'm having to pour very very small amounts in his mouth/ on his lips to lick off, it takes a long time but at the end he consumes about 1-1.5 oz. Is this enough water for him? How much would he need to consume in a day? Also what foods would you recommend feeding him, as he has rejected canned food in gravy, tuna (in a solid form) tuna water okay, chicken, dry food, and turkey. Thank you for your help, and will post updates on how he is doing.

If anyone else has any thoughts/suggestions on what Kobe's condition may be or advice on what to feed him and how much water to give a day I would greatly appreciate it! I am very worried about my cat's health and any feedback would really help until he can go see a Vet.

Thank you

The best thing for your cat right now is to be seen by a vet to find out what is going on. He sounds very sick and so I wouldn't want to speculate or make suggestions at this point as to what food is best. He needs a full examination to determine the cause of vomiting, pain and reluctance to drink or eat much. Please don't delay - Make an appointment for your kitty to be seen as soon as possible!

If he isn't going to the bathroom, he could have a urinary blockage, please get your cat to the vet AS SOON AS THE VET OPENS.  Blocked urinary tract in cats can be deadly.  The bloating could also be an indication of that.  Please take your kitty to the vet.

:yeah: I don't think it can be stressed enough that your cat needs to see a vet as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone for the positive messages. It turns out Kobe had an uniary blockage and is at the vet going under surgery at the moment to get medical attention. He's gonna be in the vet hospital a few days after that, the vet was extremely nice and I'm very thankful he's getting treated.

I am really glad to hear that he is getting treated. Urinary blockages can be fatal if not caught early enough. I am sure your vet will discuss treatment and diet changes with you, but in the meanwhile here's some good information written by a vet on treating and preventing urinary tract issues in cats. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth Many vibes for Kobe for a quick recovery.

I've been through this before with one of my cats many years ago.  He had several blockages over the years and underwent catheterizations and antibiotics.   I watched him very closely (especially litter box habits and urine output) and caught the symptoms early and got him to the vet promptly when he had problems.  There was a more radical surgical option that may or may not have been successful,  but we never went down that road with him.   I know there are different causes/reasons for the blockages but regardless,  well done on your behalf in getting Kobe in to the Vet.   Hope all goes well.

Never, ever wait more than 24 hours when you see your kitty in distress. Missing a meal is one thing, but not drinking can be deadly. Many years ago I had a white Persian male cat who could not pee, his belly swelled and I waited the whole weekend before I took him to the vet. I almost lost him. The vet unblocked him but kitty had another blockage and a third and a fourth within a few weeks. I ran out of money. The vet asked if he could experiment on him, trying to figure out why kitty kept getting blocked and he would not charge me anything. The vet thought it was the food I was feeding the cat which had a lot of "ash" in it. (I won't mention the well-known brand, its formula has changed but I still won't use it) . The vet had the cat for over three months during which time he would unblock the cat, feed it some other food which did not block him, then feed him the original food and lo and behold the cat got blocked again!  He did this three times just to make sure it was the food. I visited kitty three times per week so he would not forget me through this ordeal. I hated doing this to him but otherwise he would have died a very painful death. The staff combed him every day and gave him a bath every week so when I got him back he was still nice and white without tangles, but some of his fur had thinned, especially on his tail from being in a cage the whole time, and he was pretty thin. After I got him home, put him on the vet-recommended food and petted and loved him a lot he put on weight again, his fur came back in and he lived to be 20 years old.

Last year my black cat, the one who is my avatar, was straining to poop, sometimes even bleeding, getting pus-filled pockets around his anus which kept being drained by the vet (again getting to be pretty expensive). My vet could not figure out why Panthera kept getting so constipated, it would hang halfway out and he could not push it all the way out. He sent me to a specialist who finally found that Panthera had an anal hernia which needed to be repaired as the poop kept getting stuck in th hernia. After the surgery he looked very weird because of his shaved pink butt. There have been no problems since then. This too could have killed my cat, mostly because of infection.

I used to have a cat with UTI and IBD issues.  Watch the litter habits closely if you see him straining or little bit of blood  or spotting it's likely a UTI if they aren't eating  and you find them sitting close to the water or not showing any interest in food could be IBD or both.   Also watch for you cat going out of the litterbox that usually a sure sign something is up.  Glad to hear your kitty got the vet.  Cats can't go long without eating or drinking so keep that in mind.  Their systems start to shut down if they go very long without either or.  I hospitalized my IBD/UTI cat twice and almost lost him but he made to 15 years.

I read through every one comments and I am happy to know that other kitty's have made it successfully after surgery. Kobe is still at the Vet's and had surgery earlier today to address the urinary blockage. He is still recovering and his kidney's are weak after the surgery the next 24 hours will be critical for his recovery.  I am actively praying Kobe will be okay and have a strong recovery, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He is receiving treatment for his kidneys and is on IV's and pain medication. I am going to see him tomorrow morning! The vet sent me a video of Kobe and said he's been wagging his tail ever since he got of surgery and that is the number one indicator that he is happy, and Kobe was wrapped in a blanket sleeping on a pillow.

I wish you all good health for your family and kitty companions!

Best,

Kobe and Aly <3
