My elderly cat has developed mystery sores under her mouth, above and next to her one eye, on her side and behind her one paw that neither I nor the vet can figure out why they are there. The one on the side of her mouth has black crusty scabs and when she scratches it off or I pick it it's red and looks so sore underneath. On her side she has a cluster of dark scabs and the ones above and next to her eye are bumpy scabby too. The one behind her paw, if I slightly touch it, she hisses. The only thing the vet thought it could be is a reaction to clavamox, which she's been on almost constantly for years because she has chronic upper resp/nasal issues. She also takes high blood pressure meds, but itching and skin issues is not a side affect. The vet gave me a wound spray which is suppose to work very good, it even has great reviews on amazon. She said to put it on as much as I could but the cat hates it. I've tried soaking it on a cotton ball instead of spraying it on her, but I feel so bad as all I'm doing lately is giving her meds or picking at her to the point she runs from me and we have always been so close :(
I took her in as an adult stray so I can't say for sure how old she is, but she's at minimum, 16. The poor girl is deaf, has chronic sinus problems, is a bit senile, so thin and frail, high blood pressure, these mystery sores, and pees outside of the box often. I feel so bad and think the time is coming to out her down. I don't think she's in pain, just miserable, but the sores might hurt :( she does eat and actual yells at me very insistent sometimes for treats etc.
I know this was lengthy, but I wanted to provide as much background as possible. If anyone has any clue what these bumpy scabs and sores are, I'd appreciate it. I just took a pic of the one next to her mouth, it's awful, I feel so bad for her. How do I post it? I clicked next to import pics, but nothing happened

Skin problems can be very hard to diagnose but she needs a vet regardless.  It looks serious and is probably causing her discomfort.

I would consider a second opinion then.  I have had better luck with cat's only vets although that isn't a guarantee.  Your kitty like many senior kitties has several health issues and I think maybe a feline specialist might be able to do a better job with controlling them, clearing up her skin and giving her a better quality of life.

Are there any animal dermatologists in your area?  They may be more familiar with what is going on with your kitty.  I would suggest maybe some sort of immune condition.

Sandy I don't live in a big city and they're ah no cat specialists, just dog/cat vets. She's old and frail so I won't put her through long car travel.

My cat had a bunch of scabs  along one side of her body and one leg. They would weep. I took her to the vet and he said she had Scabby cat disease. He gave her a shot and pills to put in her food. She actually gain weight and a lot of the sores healed up. She still has some scabs but not as bad as it was. You might ask the vet if it could be this. I don't pick at them this could make for an infection.

I wish you luck finding out what it is.

When was her last blood work up? I ask because you mentioned weight loss, inappropriate urination, orientation issues, high blood pressure, and these sores. Diabetes is a possibility.

I hope you find an answer soon. I know what it's like to juggle an animal's age and psychological well-being with getting them medical care. Sometimes it isn't that easy.

I looked up the scabby ca disease and it said small pimples, which she does not have, but it looks like miliary dermatitis to me

I haven't see a lesion that big before, but my cat got a similar smaller one in the same spot on her mouth. She had similar smaller ones down her back. She was given an antibiotic injection and steroids and they went away. Your cat's lesion look like it needs attention. It does look like some sort of dermatitis but a Vet needs to diagnose that. I'd be concerned if your cat does not have other spots on her body. Does she have roughness of her skin near the base of her tail? They do get these when they age too.

No not by her tail, all mostly head area. It's def miliary dermatitis because it says small crusty millet seed like bumps with red underneath, that's exactly it. It's the cause tho to be found. Can be from flea allergy, food allergy, mites. She was checked for mites, is indoors but in summer can go n enclosed yard when m with her but I use frontline. Many years ago, like13, she had tiny bumps all over and the vet found one lousy flea and said she was very allergic. I wonder if even with the frontline she got bit and it just escalated from there. Can't believe the vet didn't recognize it as miliary derm because from the looks and description I found myself, that's it. She's just so old and fragile, I don't know what more she can possibly handle me wise :(

From what you say it could be that the flea bite triggered off a reaction, or maybe the treatment, and potentially once it started her system could have been sensitized and react to other things so worth thinking about what's in her food as well, and what her feeding bowl as made of.  If the bowls are plastc try changing them and try grain free food.  Talk to your vet again with your potential diagnosis in mind and see what they say.  It could be something so simple that's needed to improve her health and quality of life so much and it would be so sad if you weren't able to find a vet in your area able to help.  Your poor old girl,  I know how attached you can get as they become older and more frail, I think my girls just grew and grew on me as they aged.

With the missing the box in later years, I resorted to puppy pads under the tray so they caught any solid stuff or pee that went over the edge:  it stopped pee trapped under the tray from getting too smelling and made a big difference to the cleaning up.
