The can is fine, IMO. Some people use tupperware instead of the can. Do you have a cover for the can to retain its freshness? There's pet covers made for the odd-sized cat cans.

Opened food shouldn't be stored in the cans they came in.  Leaving it in the original container can affect food taste and nutritional values once opened. It's better to move it to either a small plastic, ceramic or glass container with a proper cover.  If you have to leave it in the original can for some reason, at the very least you should have one of those lids meant for that kind of container to assure no air leaks in - other odors from the fridge can change the flavor of the food, let alone, you wouldn't want the smell of cat food to infiltrate your refrigerator.  Or at least, I think not

I use a plastic lid on the can if I'm only going to be storing the food in the fridge for half a day. Any longer than that, and I put the food in small plastic containers with lids that are designed for safely storing baby food.

I store it in the fridge, with a lid.  It's never in there long enough to worry about it--just overnight, or between the morning and evening feedings.

It's better if you transfer it to some other container, but that being said, I stored it in the can. My neighbors say that one of their cats will only eat freshly opened food, and maybe the change in taste that sivyaleah has pointed out has something to do with it.

Mine won't eat leftovers no matter what container I put it in!  If they don't finish it, I have to toss it ;(

They certainly are MY cats.  I hate leftovers also lol.

I initially thought that Jamie only wanted freshly opened cans, but it turned out it was the size of the cans that mattered to him. If the food wasn't in a single-serving can, he wouldn't eat it. That was mystifying till a guy who worked for a pet food company told me the food was cooked in the cans, so the smaller size meant less cooking and therefore more taste.

Mogli isn't so fussy, fortunately.

Wow, that's interesting!  Who'd have thought the taste would be different.  I'm sure not going to see if I can tell the difference
.  All I know is that mine don't seem to like cold leftovers, but occasionally I can get them to eat them if I gently warm them on "defrost" in the micro for less than 15 seconds.

Also, depending on my mood, I either store it in the can with a lid, or transfer it into a plastic tub with a lid.  I guess it really depends on whether I can readily get my hands on a lid that fits the can or not.
