Metronidazole for my 2 1/2 months old kitten

my vet prescribed my kitten a small dosage of metronidazole for her poop problem. i just started giving it to her last night, and then this morning she vomited twice. i researched that metronidazole has some bad effects for cats and sometimes dangerous, should i continue giving it to her? our vet prescribed it for 7days.

has any of you tried it? or any of you have experienced giving it to cat? should i continue giving it to her?

*most* of the time the side effects happen with prolonged use.  That being said, I have given it to several of my cats over the years without a problem, they have only been on it short term though (under 1-2 weeks)

I've had it prescribed by a vet for kittens only a few weeks old (much smaller dose, probably) with no problems.  I would suggest you call the vet, he/she should follow through with you and know if there is something to be concerned about, or perhaps suggest lowering the dose.

thanks for your replies.. do you still remember the dosage you gave for your kittens? mine is .5ml per intake, and for every 12hrs. Is that too much? do you think i should lower the dosage? im worried she wont feel well and loose her appetite, 7days of loosing her appetite can really affect her health.

I was given pill form, 1/2 of a 25mg tablet (which is the equivalent of .5 ml), but once a day, not twice. 

However, these kittens were a bit younger, and I don't know what the reasons you were given it for were. 

So I would think that by 12 hours it would be safe to give a 2nd dose.

However, I would recommend calling your vet and asking, if it's only been one day of vomiting, it might be too early to worry.

is your kitten eating, but just vomiting, or not eating at all either?

If your kitty doesn't eat, try tempting or force feeding some meat only baby food mixed with some water or kmr, some tuna with the liquid, or wet kitten food mixed with some kmr, or even better, kmr so he doesn't get dehydrated.

I wouldn't stop giving the meds until you talked to the vet, maybe ask the vet about cutting out one of the doses, but there may be a very good reason he gave two doses.  Most likely the vet should be able to talk to you on the phone and you shouldn't have to go in again.

I've had vets give me different doses for different cats at different times and when I've asked, it usually had to do with the different problems they were given the meds for.

ah okay thanks again, i'll call my vet. She ate normally this morning, then i gave her medicine after her meal, then after an hour she vomited. This was her first time to throwup since she was born, i guess it was really because of the medicine.

It may be her first time to throw up but I can guarantee you it definitely won't be her last!!!  LOL

Does the bottle or receipt say what MG is it per ML?  The normal dose is 5 to 23mg per pound once or twice a day.  IMO twice a day works best.

What exactly was her poop problem?  Some can cause vomiting in cats.

her poop was soft and have some blood in it. Her vet get sample of her poop and perform some some tests in it but no problems found. The vet just told me that there might be wound or sore in inside that might cause the blood. Then he prescribed this medicine for assurance.
