Happy weekend everyone! During the polar vortex, the small town of Hell, Michigan, recorded temperatures of -17C (1 F). Jokes abound about the weather being so bad that even Hell had frozen over. (Pigtown, Baltimore did not fly though, sadly)

Do you see yourself living or settling down in a town with an unfortunate name? Assuming everything else about the town meets your criteria, will the name of the town be enough of a turn-off for you? If you do live in a town with an unfortunate name, have you thought about moving somewhere else or does it not bother you?

It would probably encourage me to move there. :D Sometimes I have an odd sense of humor.

Welcome to the question of the day, Cory. :)

No I wouldn't mind what the name of my town or city was, if I liked it there it wouldn't bother me at all.

It would probably add to the attraction for me. I love weird town names. Are you familiar with "Intercourse", "Climax", "Jugtown" and "Bird-in-Hand" in Pennsylvania? Bavaria and Austria have some strange ones, too. My favorite Bavarian one is "Aicha vorm Wald" near Passau. "Aicha" is Bavarian for "oak" (Eiche), so the town is called "The Oak Before the Forest". There's a little town ("Ort") called "Ort" in Austria, i.e., the town is called "Town".

OMG I've been to all those towns in PA!

All, very cute - Quaker country.

I think Blue Ball is between Intercourse and Gap in PA. I've been to all of them, too.

Hehhee I avoided giving specific names since... you know, but since we're pulling no punches...

I wouldn't mind mildly amusing names like Hell, MI or Boring, Oregon, but I'm not sure I want to live in a place like Titty-Ho, Northamptonshire; Crotch Crescent, Oxford or
F***ing, Austria
. I'm thinking along the lines of professionalism; the first thought to anyone's mind who isn't familiar must be, "Is this a joke? I guess this person isn't serious."

Ha! lf someone said they were from
F***ing, Austria
, l'd likely say "Well if you don't like it there, move" LOL.

True enough. lt would be normal locally, but to relocate and apply for a job for example, it might be a little embarrassing to say where you were from.

I'd be more inclined to avoid really common names..

Some dubious Australian place names:

Diapur (Victoria)

Wonglepong (in Queensland)

Poowong (Victoria)

Nowhere Else (Tasmania)

Dunedoo ((NSW) (pronounced dunny-doo.  A 'dunny' is an Australian outside toilet)

and my personal favourite:

Damboring (Western Australia)

I wouldn't care about the city name, but I have heard that people who live on Dork Street do have trouble because nobody believes them when they fill out forms, etc. One guy lost out on a job because the hiring manager thought there was a mistake on his resume.

We have a city called Happy Camp in northern California. So if you live there, you're a Happy Camper.
