Hi,

I have a 12 year old orange tabby. He is both an indoor and outdoor cat and on some occasions have left him outside overnight.  Tigger is his name. So for awhile Tigger was very good using his litter box and even had no problems when we changed home. Though for the past year maybe more, there's been instances where he will pee on certain spots on the carpet in my downstairs living room and has peed on some carpets in my various washrooms.  As well he sometimes takes a poop near my dartboard and once or twice in a hallway. Though usually just those areas mainly. I don't know if he's sick, but I have thought about going to the vet.  He always has food as I got one of those auto feeder and I did have a filtered water thing, but the motor broke so I just refill it everyday and sometimes it doesn't look like he drank that much from it.

I have no idea what to try and my mom is getting fed up.  I could use suggestions. I read this once and thought it's worth mentioning, but half a year ago he had diarrhea or vomit as there were a couple areas that were juicy on my carpet and tile floors, but it only happened the one time so I never thought about it.

I do have one other issue with my cat.  He tends to attack people namely my sister. He bites people for no reason an example would be with my uncle's gf. I wasn't here but apparently she was petting him and he was being very nice and adorable and 30-1 hr later he comes back and she starts to pet him again and then out of nowhere he bit her. He bites when people pet him, but its random and out of nowhere he attacks us. He's biting me just sitting down on the ground watching TV. Though usually the back of the foot.  Is this a behavioral thing. Like I;m not paying attention to him, he wants to play, wants food(though he has more than he can finish) or is he an a-hole of a cat?? lol

To add one final note, I personally spend most time in my room and when I come downstairs for food or whatever my cat sometimes follows me around in the kitchen almost expecting something and then as I go back upstairs he bites me before I even take a step and this is the usual scenario.  Also I have a cat bed for him in my room which he uses, but ya have no clue as to why he has these two problems as we are very nice.

Cats going outside of the litter box is usually their way of communicating that they are ill. He needs to see a vet.

When was the last time he had a checkup? From your post, it sounds like he's eating dry and not drinking much water. Males are more prone to the effects of crystals in their urine, and that combination of food and hydration is a common cause. He may be going out of the box because of discomfort that he's associating with the box.

You also need to get an enzyme cleaner for the spots he's peed to get rid of the smell, else he'll be inclined to go back to those spots.

Hi there ..

Sometimes going outside the litter box can be the result of change in the environment - a  change in the type or brand of litter that the cat doesn't like or the location of the litter box has changed. Changes in feeding schedule or a switch to a different food, and even change in the amount or lack of interaction with you. Do you feed Tigger each day or is it someone else usually?

You say that your cat is both an indoor and outdoor cat. It may be possible that he had a recent confrontation that left him feeling shaken and insecure. This happened to my cat Max once and while he didn't develop an issue with elimination, I noticed that he was behaving anxious and was not himself for a couple of days afterward.

Cats are very much creatures of habit and sometimes change or certain events can cause them to act out such as the biting you mention or develop issues with inappropriate elimination. The biting episodes definitely sound like he is trying to get your attention about something. Having Tigger checked out to rule out any medical conditions that may be contributing to the elimination and biting should be done as a first priority.

Hi,

I will try out the suggestions you guys said. Also it may be the new litter I am using, last time I went and bought it, it was a different kind as I couldn't find the regular one I usually get for him.  He still uses the litter box, but accidents happen.

There was an incident one time outside. While me and my brother were having a smoke we heard a weird noise. So we opened our garage and Tigger was hissing at a fox that was like 5m away from him. We scared the fox away and there was no injuries, but we wouldn't let him out for awhile. Though regardless of that he still always wanted to go outside. Before that when he was younger he came back roughed up a couple times. It was just little cuts, but I don't know if he was fighting other cats or maybe a fence cut him. In my old neighborhood he would always cross the street to this park and one time on my porch he was hissing at another cat.

The drinking and eating issue is maybe he doesn't drink a lot. Like if I was to not change his water for a few days than I may notice a big drop in water level(like half is gone). Also I don't know if this makes a difference, but I am using the CatIT water fountain. The motor inside broke so it's filtration and keeping the water cool and fresh does not work anymore. Though I still use it just on it own as my first metal bowl I bought for him, I lost it so. Though I will try the vet as the first thing.

I feel your pain and have lived through these issues. I'd try a few things. First, for whatever reason, animals are prone to urinary tract infections she the weather changes. It could be as simple as the cat needs meds as it associates the litter box with pain and will look for other places to go in hopes of it not hurting. The other thing you can try (if it's not a uti) is cat attract litter, as it works very well.

I'm having some serious issues with my two cats. I went out of town for 2 weeks and asked a friends to check in with them. I came hone to find the litter box was overflowed. Thankfully they were not out of good or water. But ever since then neither one of them will use the box. Ice cleaned it and put fresh litter in. didn't work. I got a new box and moved it and neither of them will use it. I don't know what else to do.I live in an apartment complex and if they can't get back on track I'll have too find them a new home. I couldn't make it without my babies. Please help.
