Background: Otter is an 8 month old DHS. She is also not fixed (we had to delay her surgery because she developed a nasty fever, which she recovered just fine from).

Yesterday morning, Otter puked a little, and seemed to be a little grumpy, but no worse for wear. She stayed in my room most of the day, and played a couple of times, but no big deal. She ate moist, and we have dry out all the time (Nature's Variety for both). Today, she was a little active but still grumpy. Ate some moist. Drank some water. I havnt seen her use the litter box, but I have been working all day. Just a few minutes ago, she puked up some medium brown liquid with a few chunks of dry (she had just eaten a little), but the thing is, it stunk. Im guessing very bad right?

Well, we really don't have a lot of information. It could be a lot of things but I like to rule out simple things first. Do you have a thermometer? You could check her temp by placing it in her armpit. Is she an only cat? If not, you're on litter box patrol for a while.

Is there any hair in the vomit? Is she vomiting everything she eats?

No, no thermometer..or well I have the temporal scanner which wouldnt work on her. She is not an only cat. She is locked in my room with her sister (they cannot be separated or theyll throw a hissy fit) so I am watching her. She has only thrown up twice, yesterday and today (no one has found any proof otherwise) so no, she is not vomiting every time she eats. She is keeping her water down.

If it stunk it could be bile. Her tummy seems to be upset. When was her last bowel movement? Like peaches said, could be a lot of things.

I'd suggest to observe her closely. If she is getting lethargic or has a fever act fast.  If she seems fine apart from that but continues to puke, call your vet tomorrow morning and see what he suggests.

I know she is lethargic, but she really wants to play. Is that lethargic? I dont know about her bowl movement. Like I said, she is not the only cat in the household. Im watching her right now.

If they are throwing up whole crunchies, of the dry food, it means, their tummy can't digest it. Could be a upset tummy, could be a blockage, like hairballs, or something she ate, or she may have gotten into plants or flowers, or something that is toxic to kitties.

Do you give her any people food at all?

Do you have plants or flowers?

What kind of treaties, if any, do you give?

When they throw up like that, you do not give any food. Just like people, you need to let her tummy settle. You give 1/2 teaspoon baby food, chicken or turkey only, I use Gerber, some use Beechnut, and mix it with water, so its like a soup.

This keeps them hydrated and gives them some nutrition.

You wait 12 hours, then try like 1/4 -1/2 of their normal food, if they still throw up, ya got a problem.

Its best to get her to a vet, and ask for an x-ray. This will show if she has a blockage, if she ate something, or if it is hairballs, or she could possibly be constipated. It will also show, if her intestines are inflammed, which would cause throw up too, but it sounds like the foodies are not even getting that far.

I would call your vet, first thing in the morning.

What moist do you feed?

You might also want to do a search for Natures Variety Recalls, a few come up, granted they are from last year, but, they have had more than their share, so its possible, the prob, salmonella, is showing up again.

In any case, she needs to be seen, by a vet.

I know how to settle her tummy, but not knowing the kitty, or what her issue is, it should come from a vet, so ask.  They should know about Pepcid AC. Never give any over the counter products, unless advised to , by a vet, as you could make the issue worse.

That she is drinking water, and keeping it down, is a good sign. Please let us know, what the vet said.

I was going to call the vet in the morning, but I was freaking out because I had never seen that type of puke before, and the ER vet wasn't (still isnt) answering. She sneaks people food from our plates, but she hasnt had any in a while. No plants, and I give her Pet Naturals UT Support. I switch between Nature's Variety and Weruva wet (all flavors, but always grain-free).  Her dry is Nature's Variety Instinct raw boost chicken flavored. I have some baby food from when my last cat got sick. I had given her food after the first vomit episode because I figured it was one of those monthly things. Her food is currently up and has been since the second vomit episode.

Yesterday I gave her a can of weruva around 8:00pm and she kept it down all night. Dry is always out. She ate a little NV moist around 4 when my roomate got home. She only puked about 1100pm, which was the yucky vomit. Food is up. Locked her in my room around 800pm. No litter box activity yet.

We have more than 1 ER vet in our area, is it possible, you do too?  When we call our vet, after hours, the recording gives the ER vets and the numbers, is it possible yours does too?

When was the last time she ate, and when was the last time, she threw up, and about how long, in between when she ate, and when she threw up.

What, does she take, from your plates, some people food, is toxic to kitties.  Just a suggestion, but you might want to teach her, not to touch your plates, or food on the counter.

Kinda unusual for the ER vet not to anser, look it up on the web, is it possible, he/she only has certain hours.

I live in a small town, so the ER vet I am calling is two hours away. The closest one after that is another half an hour and they will refuse me unless I have cash on hand and for every test they do (which I dont). The last time she ate was bout 1050, a few small bites of kibble. She vomited a few minutes later. The only other time she vomited was yesterday around 600am. The other times she ate (mentioned above) she was fine.

And hamburger is the only thing she usually grabs.

If she threw up, that quickly, the issue sounds like it is in her tummy, could be something she got into, or something she ate, her tummy is rejecting the foodies, it won't even attempt to digest it.

Pick up all the food, don't give her anything, the rest of the night, one of the links I gave you, even says so. Then call your regular vet first thing in the morning.

I understand how you feel, I too get upset, when one of mine, gets sick too.

I came home from a show, late on a Sun night, to 2, 10 week old kittens throwing up, pet sitter had given them adult foods, by mistake, clearly says kitten food, but thats what she said. They went in first thing Mon morn, they did an x-ray, both had inflammed intestines, and were put on Metronidazole. So ya, I understand, freaking out and being upset too.

We have 2 ER's, one like 10 min away, the other one is like 45 min away, but that one, is like a high class hospital, so if I need a ER vet, I take them there. I did call them, they said the kittens can wait, and take them in to reg vet, first thing. Yes, ER's can be very expensive, and they will tell you, if it can wait, or if you need to come in right now.

I got a hold of the ER and they said "The smelly is very serious, you would want to bring her in, but we can't actually tell you exactly to come in right now or to wait until the morning because if a pet dies..." I cut them off after that.

All throw up, weather it is human or kitty, smells really bad, like, it gags you.  Unless it has a very distinctive odor, that you are describing to them, and that is telling them, its serious, then they would tell you to come in now. They should be able to tell you, based on the symptoms you gave them, if she should be seen tonight, or it can wait until the morning.

Look at the links I gave you, and see which situation, you feel, fits hers, and see what the instructions say.

If it makes you feel better, and you have the money, and can get her there, then take her in.  You can also call other ER's and ask them, what they feel, if she should be seen tonight or in the morning, at least it might give you peace of mind.

I could tell, when the 2 kittens were sick, it could wait for the morning. If she is lethargic, then she should go in tonight.

Just got home from work, so gotta go relax and get something to eat. Best of luck, whatever you decide, and please keep us updated.

Im sorry to bother, but what exactly is lethargic? Is that when they dont really move at all? Otters been up and about. She'll kind of lay around for a bit. Get up, drink, maybe bat at her sister or hit a mouse. She got up for a bit before I locked her up and was wandering downstairs. Then she'll sleep again or lay there and look grumpy. Is that it?

Lethargic is like basically 'out of it' acting, not interested, laying around mostly,  drowsy acting, slow, sluggish. Even clumsy/limp depending on how lethargic they are.

Flint has been a great help, I just wanted to add in that be careful she doesn't get any onions when she swipes people food, they are, along with several other people foods, poisonous to cats.

Just a thought :)

Good luck!

Sebastian has confirmed chronic pancreatitis and suspected IBD. There have been a few times that he's vomited a semi-translucent brownish liquid that stunk to the high heaven (no chunks).

The frequent vomiting is concerning. Have you taken her into the vet, yet?

UPDATE: Otter was at the vet all day. She does have something in her tummy, but it is slowly moving so we are holding off on surgery. She can drink normally, but when she goes to eat she gets a little too excited and eats too much so I have to limit her food. She has laxatone (sp?) and I am too watch her this weekend.
