My cute little ginger tabby is usually very playful and outgoing. He normally wants to be around me 24/7 when I'm home. As an inside cat I hear that is normal and being a cat that was abandoned by his family at a young age. He was at first very timid but over a year he has become my best friend and my baby. He even sleeps under the covers in my bed at night. It's only been a day and a half but I'm concerned about his hiding and reluctance to socialise. He has been hiding under my bed and spending all day in the bedroom. Usually after feeding time he will cuddle with my partner and me on the couch at night and enjoys the sound of my tv shows. The last night and tonight he came out and had his food (eating normally) and then just ran away. He now has been sitting under my bed for about 4 hours now. Any thoughts? Is this a faze or is there something wrong?

I would get him checked by a vet.  It's good that he is still eating but the hiding can be a sign of illness.  It can also be something behavioral especially since he is still eating but I would rule out any illness with a trip to the vet.

He is a cute kitty.

What a cute kitty!

If he was not eating I might be very inclined to say he might be sick, but if he is eating (and urinating/defecating) like normal then perhaps not. I'd say you should still take him to the vet...some cats do still eat and such when ill.

Aside from thaf, have there been any changes in house recently? New work hours, new visitors, any kids visiting who may have pestered him, pesky door-to-door people who like to ring the doorbell incessantly, a new cat prowling outside the windows, etc? Something may have spooked him and it might just take him a bit of time to recover. I used to have a cat (crossed the Rainbow Bridge a few years ago) who was very social too but without fail she would get spooked by the noise of garbage truck outside once a week and take a day or so to recover. Poor kitty. Some are also very sensitive to changes in routine. My sister's cat gets pissed at her if she goes away for a weekend or holiday and ignores her/hides for a few days when she gets back.

Hopefully someone else here has some better insight, but I definitely would take him to vet just to be safe if he has not come around today.

I would definitely get him checked out by a vet just to make sure nothing is wrong with him, cats generally hide if there is something going on either medically or behaviorally that is upsetting them.

I agree with scubacat. If he is still eating normally, same amount and with no signs of discomfort there may be something new in the environment that may be disturbing him that he needs to get used to. Mine would hide for at least a day if I have company over or if someone comes to repair something at the house.

I once had a cat who hid for multiple days behind the laundry machine (he came to eat and use the litter) after my bf at the time (now ex) invited a group of people over they played some unusual sounding Brazilian string instruments. I had told him not to play the instruments in the house, but I was ignored. Anyhow, I agree with the advice above re ruling out a health issue by going to the vet - but hopefully it is just a fear response to something going on in the house etc.

Cute kitty btw!!

To be on the safe side, I would get him a check-up at the vet.

This could be the beginning of something that you are seeing early signs of, and it will put your mind at ease to either get a clean bill of health or have him treated for something that could have been much worse had you not been so in tune with your tabby boy.
