Hi all, My baby Bourbon had his yearly check up yesterday (he's about 16 months old) and he got the distemper vaccine and the rabies vaccine. Our appt was 330 yesterday, he seemed fine for the few hours we got home but around 8pm he was passed out cold which I assumed was because he had quite the adventurous day... Today he can hardly walk and won't touch food or water just laying in his little hideaway toy thing. I'm assuming he can't walk because the vet gave him one shot on his back near his arm and the other near his leg. I'm so worried! But according to the paperwork the vet gave us these symptoms are under the "normal side effects" and I don't see any of the "serious" side effects. Am I worrying too much?

Those do not sound like normal symptoms to me. I'd be calling or driving kitty to the vet.

The not eating or drinking doesn't sound normal to me.  I remember when Patches got his rabies at about that age, maybe a little younger, it was obvious that he was very sore but he didn't quit eating or drinking.  He was just moving like a very old arthritic kitty for a short time.

Sorry to read of this .. Some soreness and lethargy is expected as these are heavy drugs for a young cat .. I would keep an eye on his breathing and temperature. If you have a digital thermometer, you can do an underarm or ear check. If not, and you feel him becoming warmer than normal, I would get him back to the vet right away. In fact, I would call your vet anyway, and let them know about your concerns. Don't feel like you are overreacting! You are just being a concerned and caring momma.

Thank you oneandahalfcats oneandahalfcats - We had to stop by with a fecal sample this morning and I asked them about it, they said some cats hardly react to it and some take a day or two to get back to normal so they said to watch him. & they said if he doesn't seem better by THURSDAY to call them... I was thinking geesh two days? I'd definitely be bringing him in tomorrow (Wednesday) if he's not back to normal. But - good news is he got up and walked around a bit more a little bit ago and he ate some of his food (Thank God)!!

I'm a huge worry wart, this is my first pet ever so I'm still trying to figure out what to expect and what to worry about!! I appreciate the feedback everyone. Love this site!!!!

It may even be different the next time.  My kitty that was moving like an old arthritic kitty didn't do that the next time and my other kitty never did that.

Oh good. Glad to hear that the little one is coming around!

Yes, some cats do fine while others can take it hard .. Just like humans really.

You are doing fine .. A little healthy worry is a good thing! Enjoy your little one ..

Glad to hear he is doing better.  For the future insist that your vet give your cat something for pain before vaccinations.  The vet I work for does this with cats who have painful reactions and it really helps.  Just make sure they don't give your cat Metacam as the pain preventative.
