Hi everyone!

I would just like an outsider opinion on this. A month ago and a half, I changed my cats' food from Science Diet Hairball Control to Halo Hearty Chicken. Now, for the first few weeks, it went well for both of my cats. However, 2 weeks ago, I noticed that Saturn my ragdoll has blood in her poop. I took her and a sample of her poop to the vet and they didn't find anything wrong with her, I was told that she had just difficulty pooping because it was dry and just in case she had parasites, they de-wormed her. After that bout, the blood slowly disappeared.

Now it has been a week since then and the blood in her poop came back. Before there was blood, she had soft poop (it's still formed and not liquid-y, just soft) for 2-3 days. My other kitten on the other hand is doing fine.

Anybody got an idea what has gotten into her? I'm worried if it could be the food?  I'm bringing her back to a different vet later too so I can have a different opinion since maybe the first one wasn't able to diagnose what's wrong with her. :(

Welcome to The Cat Site, sorry it's under these conditions.  I'm glad you're getting a second opinion--it can never hurt.

Ritz had bright red blood ON her poop, and the vet diagnosed it as, basically, constipation.  The vet prescribed antibiotics I believe.  (Note, if blood is IN the stool, this is a different condition and more serious.)  She continues to be somewhat prone to constipation, and I feed the low end of bone (I feed prey model raw/frankenprey.)

I think both of the foods you mentioned are dry, correct?  That could be one cause--not enough water.  Can you feed wet food, at least a little, and add water to it?  You can also try adding about a teaspoon of plain pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) in wet food once or twice a day.  Cats have a very low thirst drive.  To increase water consumption, you could also get a water fountain or simply add some water to the wet food.  It's going to be a trial and error to see what works.  Good luck, and let us know what the 2nd vet says.

One of my cats had the same problem, bright red blood and mucus ON her poop.

- I took her to several vets and we tried several things: at first we thought she had worms, so we gave her a dewormer.

- She was fine for a few days and then the blood was back.

- We then tried Bezo-Pet (some kind of mild laxative), thinking it was constipation. We were giving her wet food and more water anyway, as I was trying to wean them off kibbles.

- After that we tried Sulfasalazine, thinking it was colitis.

Basically, everything we tried failed or only worked for a few days. After a month of on and off blood on her stool I was desperate, stalking her while she used the litterbox and going crazy. My vets called IDIOPATHIC, as in "we have no idea". I was considering ultrasounds and colonoscopies when people on TCS recommended slippery elm bark. And finally something worked.

Given the fact that SEB (slippery elm bark), was the solution, I am 100% sure it was something in the food irritating her.

I do hope you will find out sooner than I did what is wrong with your Saturn and please keep us posted.

Have you tried different kinds of foods? Different proteins? Switching from dry food to wet food? Has your cat been dewormed?

There are lots of things to rule out.

If she has blood and mucus that's a different problem and should really go to the vet.

It's very important.  Are you saying that they are pooping only blood?  The vet may only charge you one office fee since it's two cats with the same issue.

Have they been dewormed?  Vaccinated?  Neutered?

My Dad Doesn't wanted to be neutered
You can't have two intact males and not have them neutered.  They will start spraying and get very territorial.  Fights become deadly quickly.  They will be happier and healthier if they are neutered.

They still need to go to the vet.  I suggest you have the vet talk to your dad about neutering too.  Why doesn't he want to have them neutered?

You will need to talk to him about it.  He is putting both cats in serious danger.  See if he can put aside his personal discomfort as a man to do what is best for the cats.  They may quite actually kill one another otherwise.  They will also not be good pets as they will be spraying in your house...
