I live near Buffalo, NY where the temps will be getting very cold Monday & Tuesday. Wind chills of 20-30 below are being forecast. I have 4 ferals on my property ( A mama cat and 3 of her almost adult kittens) The kittens have bonded and have separated from Mama. I have 2 kitty tube shelters with straw and heated pads and also a larger, well-built insulated shelter with heated pad and straw.
Mama cat prefers to be solitary...she claims the kitty tube in the front of my house as hers...she doesn't like sharing. The kittens hang out together on my covered deck where I have the other kitty tube. Two of them share it comfortably. The third kitten spends a good deal of time inside my home...he comes inside whenever it's too cold and he's happy to be inside for the most part. All of them have been spayed/neutered/shots and ear tipped.
Now here comes the question... There are also 2 or 3 intact Tom Cats who are occassional visiters to my feeding station - I've not been able to get them trapped and neutered yet. The third shelter - the one that was built, has straw and also a heating pad is right next to where I feed. I saw one of the Toms tonight feeding and rubbing up against the door of it. I'm wondering what the possibility is of 2 to 3 intact Toms sharing the shelter for a day or two until the arctic cold passes. Will they cooperate & share for the sake of staying warm? The shelter is big enough for about 5 adult cats. I really hate to think that one of them might be left out in the cold because they are males, competitors and usually territorial.
I really wish I knew more about feral cat behavior sometimes. Can any of you colony caretakers out there comment on this?
Thanks!
Euph
