I've heard they smell worse on dry.

Typically they smell worse if the stool goes through the system fast.

It's more about quality than texture. The cheaper foods tend to have more fillers (such as grains and vegetables), which cats don't need and thus don't get processed. That results in more waste and, depending on the ingredients, more odor.

I don't recall what Oliver's stool was like when he was dry only. That only lasted a couple of days or so after I adopted him. Sometimes his stool is very smelly. I think when I feed him fish flavors of his Fancy Feast. When he's had raw, there's almost no odor and the stool is very small.

With having zero experience with feeding raw, I have heard this many times, that feeding raw gives smaller, less stinky poops.

Here is my take on stinky poop.

With having a rescue, you can imagine how many hundreds of cats and kittens I alone have had here as temp fosters, they come here rather than other fosters homes due to medical issues, quarrantining, recovery, momma with babies, and young litters of kittens with no momma, as well as ferals, and so on.

TONS of poop experience! haha like I'm proud.....not!

While some factors will definitely affect the smell, ALOT of it is in the individual cat.

I've had feral cats come and they poop out the total garbage things they managed to dig up and eat, know telling what some of what I have seen really is.....stinks to high heaven for a good couple few days until the food I feed them gets that crap stuff cleared out.

Some cat's poop smells horrible, always, some hardly at all. My 2 house resident cats, Krissy and Simone, they eat the same exact food, mostly cheaper canned with a very small amt of good dry food, and Krissy's poop doesn't smell at all basically, but Simone's runs me out of the room until I can go scoop it out.

Same with my permanent cat room fosters, Destiny has always had rotten stinky poop, while Lucy Lu's barely has any smell.

Some cats have awful poop, some have normal smelling poops, some never get better no matter what you feed them.

High fat content food also seems to make it stinkier too.
