Oh dear. Another overnight emergency visit. Rexy has a high fever and is zonked out. Might be one of her lung infections that she has had in the past that we think stems from her asthma issues. Or maybe something related to her triaditis issues.

Put on antibiotics, decided to do home care as she is very stressed at the clinic. If no improvement in 24 hours or so, she may have to go on IV fluids at the clinic and we can do bloodwork and xray. We have seen this similar thing several times in the past, so if all goes well, the antibiotics should do the trick. But it is a huge worry.

I am not destined to get the break that I need with my kitties.

Temperature almost down to normal in only 18 hours since the antibiotics started. Thank goodness.

What is it with all these kitties causing us grief?  I am glad the antibiotics seem to be doing the trick.  Sending healing vibes your way.

It has just been RELENTLESS for a few of us on here!!

Good news is that she is starting to pick at some blended food. So this is a good sign. Even grooming a bit after she eats.

I'm so sorry to hear that Rexy was at the ER. So scary! I'm glad she's already feeling better on the antibiotics.

Lots of vibes for Rexy!

I just get confused as I assume that this is a lung infection but now I have to wonder if it could be an infection related to her triaditis. I am not sure whether it matters, as she is being "treated" as best as humanly possible to keep both conditions in check. I just have to be ready to act quickly if any sign of a fever. She seems to get this same kind of incident about once a year, and there is nothing obvious that sets it off. Frustrating. But I give my heart and soul (and pocketbook) to her care, so I just have to try my best - not much more one can do.

She is playing with toys right now!!

She is not quite herself physically and needs to eat a bit more than she is eating but still...I cannot ask for more than a 15-year old kitty with her problems less than 2 days after a very high fever to be playing with toys.

ETA - just have to boast about Rexy's spirit. She was wanting to go onto my bed - and she had a choice of the "senior staircase" to climb on the bed (to assist my older less athletic cat), or just to jump. She chose to leap up on the bed of her own accord and not use that senior staircase. Go Rexy!!

Awesome!
I think the fact that you addressed Rexy's issue so quickly really helped with a faster recovery. Go Mom!

Thank you for saying that. I continue to feel overwhelmed with my host of cat problems so positive support goes a long way.

So glad to hear she is on the upswing.  Way to be alert to her issues and get them taken care of in a hurry.  It makes all the difference in the world.

So pleased. Rexy has bounced back from the fever she had a few weeks back. After these episodes, she almost never regains her lost weight back (she is a delicate eater) but I just weighed her and she has put the lost ounces (about 4 or so) back on again!! She needs a lower phosphorus food, but also needs to keep eating, and she LOVES Weruva chicken shreds which have moderately low phosphorus but lots of good protein - this new love developed in the past week and it may be helping her gain weight back. She is such a fighter - she is elderly, of poor genes etc., has triaditis (the internal medicine vet basically said she'd only deteriorate and never be lively again - how wrong was that projection!!) - yet Rexy is bouncing back with such fight and determination. She is scooting up and down the stairs, holding her own playing with massive 11 pound Gryffin kitten (!!), using her sisal scratching pole with such joy and pride. Honestly, I've never been more proud of her than I am now - and that is saying a lot as I've always been super proud of her. She is the definition of inner strength. Gryffin's facial expression makes me totally laugh in these photos. What a little boy he is!!

Good news did not last long. Rexy took a downturn today, just 3 days after going off antibiotics. Was in emergency again this evening, this time at 11pm. Rexy was just acting a bit off, not too bad, but I took her temperature at home and it was very high - so rushed her in. We are going to give a longer course of antibiotics and we have switched the one that we are using. I cannot get a break. I counted and this is about my 25th vet visit in 2 months. Unbelievable.

Sorry to read of this latest development! .. If you are not already, it would be good to get Rexy onto a probiotic to help replenish the good bacteria that is being killed off while on the antibiotics.

Hope she is feeling better again soon ...

Thank you for message. I actually do have a probiotic here that I can use for her so will be doing that.

Oh, Rexy.
How long was she on the antibiotics? The last time she was at the ER (on 2/11 I think) you weren't sure if it was another lung infection or her triaditis. Was this ever determined? Is there a way to nail down whether this is infection or inflammation or both? It might help determine treatment options. I can't remember what medications Rexy is already on. Metronidazole is an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties, so if she's improving on it, it makes me wonder if the Metro is acting more as one over the other.

I don't think there is a lot of useful ways to nail down the issues. Not without a lot of stress and finances, and I bet there would still be uncertainty. We know that she has issues in the lungs and issues in that bile duct area. I know in the past the infection played out with almost the same temperature to the fever, and the first time it was for certain a lung infection and likely the other times before now. It is all such a confusing mess. She has had this fever thing about 4 times total including this time (about once a year or so), and it usually takes about 24 hours on antibiotics and then the fever quite suddenly disappears. We did have her on the lower range of antibiotic dosage a few weeks ago for a total of 2 weeks, so we moved it into middle range as we have to nail this bacteria one way or another - and I will keep it on her longer. This fever is now the priority. A similar things happened in 2012 when she had a fever, it came back a few days after antibiotics finished, then she went back on them and we nailed things as she was fine for well over a year. She has some issues with her lungs and the way they are now constructed due to asthma and such, and it seems to leave them susceptible to bacteria invading and thriving - at least that is the best working theory. She already looks rather fragile, so when she now has a fever, it breaks my heart. I want to help her. I cannot even give that much fluids due to heart murmur, just enough amounts to keep something in there and will do some syringe feeding today. She is just so fragile now, that I hope she can beat this thing as well as she used to. Things nearly were better this time, so hopefully with this extra push we can stabilize her again.
