My baby (I say baby but she's 1yr old) injured herself earlier today and sprained an ankle. She hasn't been putting any weight on it and I got some medicine from our local vet ER.

She is suppose to be on bed rest for 2 weeks and the poor turd is hyper as can be. She keeps trying to play with her toys even if she is hopping around!

I've got my iPad playing a video of an aquarium right now which has calmed her down, but in case she gets bored and tries to play again, what can I do to get her to rest her leg?

Is there some type of game I can play with her or any tips that might tire her out without her putting weight on her leg? I'm sure she knows best and will rest if it gets too painful but I'm afraid she may further damaging her ankle.

All help and advice appreciated!!

Personally I'd let her get on with it.  This happened to my home-bred kitten when she was 9 weeks or so.  Two vets checked her leg and found nothing serious wrong, and strangely she didn't flinch so it must have been something that only hurt when she put weight on it.

We didn't give any medication and she gradually started using it more and more, and was back to normal in 3-4 weeks.  If there had been an anti-inflamitory that wasn't a pain killer she would have had it, but we agreed that no pain killers was best as then she would have a natural warning if she did too much on it.

The only way to keep her calm is to confine her, and IMO it's best to just let the cat do what she feels like doing when they have an injury like this.   You could try like a feather teaser dangled in her face or something like that where she doesn't have to move in order to be able to play.

Thanks guys! She still won't put any weight on it but is relaxed enough to let me wipe her paw with a wet paper towel at night time. She's also opening her pad for me which is a huge improvement. Thanks again guys :)

Did the vet take xrays?  She should be improving more if it was just a sprain, she could have a fracture.

She let's us massage it for her without any fuss. Just seems to be babying it. She hasn't cried out in pain since the first day.

We didn't get an xray because the vet wanted $120 for one xray and honestly, with Christmas just gone, we don't have the money. If she stops improving in the next week or so, I will definitely be taking her in for an xray. Might make a few calls to see if anyone does it for cheaper though.
