Spot on my kitties eye?

So I posted a post the other day how I was worried about my cat that she seemed really sick and she was not opening her one eye and then either eye and she was very lame and lethargic and not really eating much or drinking. Then she was twitching and sort of jerking her head later in the night.

The next morning when I woke up she was 95% better eating energy her eyes were mostly wide open, although I noticed she was still squinting a bit every now and then. And she was still jerking her head a bit. I still took her to the vet anyway because I was scared to death the day prior and the head thing was making me nervous. Plus I just felt it important for her to get checked out after seeming so sick just the day before.

The vet said she most likely had a slight URI brought on by stress from a slight reaction from the vaccines and going into her first heat within days of each other. And also because she was still squinting slightly in the office.

He gave her two shots antibiotic and steroid for anti-inflammatory and also swabbed her ears to check for mites or signs of an infection which were both negative and told me to keep and eye on her to watch for any changes.

Well she seems to be fine today except now I have noticed a small spot on her one eye. It looks sort of like a film like a thin layer of mucus almost but I have not dared to try to wipe it with anything because I don't want to damage her eye. Also I feel if it was just mucus stuck it would have moved by now and it has been in the same spot all day. I can't exactly tell if it is on or below the first layer of her eye but I know it is not on her iris.

Has anyone ever experienced any symptoms similar to this? I have searched and searched and searched and can not find anything that matches with all the symptoms she has gone through. I will be calling the vets office tomorrow to see what he has to say about it. They were not there today because of a snow storm we had here.

But I just like to have as much knowledge as possible of my own, and also hearing people's personal experiences with things can also help when trying to figure out what is going on. So whatever experience you have will be helpful. Again I will be calling my vet, I just want to hear others thoughts or experiences.

Hi Faythe,
I'm glad your kitty is doing better (I lurked on your other thread). I'm guessing that this is the 3rd eyelid you're seeing. I'm guessing it is just a reaction to the medications she was given. What are the names of the meds? You may just want to call your vet and tell him the symptom, but I wouldn't worry unless your kitty isn't acting normal otherwise.
My cat is currently on eye drop antibiotics and atropine with a third eyelid present. She scratched her eye.
I'm sure you'll get more responses soon. This is more common than you think.

Hey
Thanks for the response and concern for Mamma. I'm slightly confused now though because I thought the third eyelid was the one that closed in the other direction from the regular eyelids. Like from inner eye to outer eye?

Am I wrong? And if I am not wrong can just a piece of that become stuck on the eye? Because the spot on her eye doesn't much look like the other lid that closes while they have their eyes closed and it is only a tiny spot. Directly in the bottom center of her eye.

Oh and I can't remember the name of the medications he said, I will have to ask when I call. And on my invoice it just says inj-antibiotic, and inj-steroid.

If it's in the same spot all day she could have an ulcer on her eye.  Sometimes they appear like a mucousy looking spot on the eye.  If it's still there in the morning I would call your vet.

Okay thanks, I am planning to call him no matter what, just wanted to hear what anyone else had to say also because like I said my vet was closed today due to snow and I couldn't find much on the Web that matched everything that has been going on with her. Would an ulcer on her eye cause all the other symptoms do you think like being weak and lethargic and twitching her head?

It does sound like a scratch. Is she squinting? Is she rubbing it? You may have to get antibiotic eye drops.

Thanks Mosimom but the link you posted is sending me right back to this page, it might have copied wrong.

And also thank you this has been stressful on her me and her older brother lol my male cat Baby. He loves her and can tell that something has been wrong with her the past few days. It's amazing how attuned they are and how it affects them. He is upset that she is sick and also that I have not been able to show him as much attention as I normally do. But things are getting back to normal and as long as we get this spot figured out and get through her spay surgery with no complications everything will be good to go for a while. :-)

Sorry. iPads and me don't mix too well. I think the steroid shot or the antibiotic shot could be the cause of those symptoms. Did she get a 14 day shot of convenia? You said she was doing well today......eating? Drinking?

I really haven't noticed her rubbing it but when this whole thing started on Wednesday at first she was holding her one eye closed, not the one with the spot. But shortly after she would not open either eye. And she pretty much kept both eyes closed all day and I could tell when she did open them they were bothering her.

Even the next morning she was squinting and in the vets that afternoon (yesterday) she was still squinting a bit. Wednesday afternoon I did notice her cheek looked slightly swollen under the eye that now has the spot. And she has kind of been itching that side of her face.

Then also she was twitching her head and jerking her head back in that direction. Also she was itching that ear a bit which is why the vet checked her ears. (twitching jerking itching)

Well she is perfectly fine now aside from the spot on her eye and slight squint. Her behavior has been pretty much back to normal before I even took her to the vet and she received the shots.

She got the shots for the symptoms of the lethargy, not eating too much, eye squinting and they were watery in the office. He said he thought she had a URI. The spot was not on her eye while we were at the vet. It did not appear until this morning I noticed it.

I can't remember what he called the antibiotic, but he offered me pills or a shot. He said the shot was 30$ more but easier then getting her to take pill everyday. I told him just to give her the shot because although I can pill both of my cats no problem, I figured it would be less stressful on her after everything she has been dealing with already.

Sounds like an ulcer. Definitely a trip to vet. He'll do a stain test and see how deep it goes. At the least you'll be putting in an antibiotic drop.....

My kitty had entropian surgery on one eye after the bottom eyelid caused an ulcer. I have this feeling we will be doing surgery on the other eye that is currently being treated real soon. Her parents are from Europe and the breeder was going for that feral look......

Oh man that's horrible. I'm sorry for your kitties, I hope everything works out.

Thanks for your input I am off to Google about ulcers and I will call the vet tomorrow to see what he has to say. Of course it couldn't have been on her eye when I was there yesterday, such is life right?

I think the worst part is having to wear a cone for my Mosi. She's had a lot of practice......last entropian was October and then she decided to eat a headband and had to have it surgically removed this December. She's a real trooper and keeps her mom on her toes!

Aww I know what you mean about the cone, when I made a big mistake of putting essential oil on a spot my male cat kept licking raw(before I looked it up instead of looking it up before I put it on). Needless to say I will never do that again. Anywho lol this was the first and only time so far since I have had him that we had experienced the cone, and I have to admit I think that was almost as hard on me as it was on him also.

He was only supposed to wear it for 24 hours total to keep him from licking the spot, I could barely stand keeping it on him for an hour. He looked so pitiful in that thing. He could barely walk right in it. He could not eat or lay down right or anything. I felt so horrible because it was all my fault!!

I took it off but when he started to lick it again I put it back on for overnight but that was it. And I'm not looking forward to Mamma having to wear one after her spay surgery.

Have you seen or tried the softer more flexible ones that they sell online? I wonder how much more they really are for the kitties.

They really do keep us on our toes tho hub? I'm glad mosi is handling everything okay and hopefully she is in full recovery in no time!! :-)
