I have an almost 16 year old cat (who lives with my mom) that has recently developed diarrhea, vomiting, and has been eating very little. She's a Maine Coon and at her healthiest weighed 15 lbs. Six months ago she weighed 9 lbs. and a few days ago at the vet now weighs 6 lbs. Her coat has become rough in texture and she's very thin to the point where I can easily feel her bones.

The vet told my mom that she tested negative for hyperthyroidism and diabetes, but is to be tested for FIV and FeLV. Her bilirubin levels are on the high end of normal and so the vet is going to do an ultrasound of her gallbladder. She does sleep a lot (what cat doesn't? lol) but she doesn't act lethargic.

Any idea what this could be? I know she's old and it could just be her body shutting down but she was my childhood cat...and I'm just not ready to let go yet. I'm holding out hope the vet can fix whatever is wrong.

I am so sorry that your childhood cat is having health problems. I hope they're able to make a diagnosis and turn things around for her!
Thank you :) I lost my other childhood cat 3.5 years ago (she was 17) and it was devastating. I'm not ready to go through another loss yet.

I lost my childhood pet (a Shih Tzu) when I was 17. We got him when I was 5 and he was just a puppy. It was really difficult when we had to put him down. He'd had chronic health issues and his quality of life had deteriorated so badly, the vet recommended it and my mom agreed. I didn't get to be there, so that made it even more difficult for me.

I'm sorry to hear that. I lost my childhood dog (pug) 7 years ago. She passed very unexpectedly from diabetic complications and she died right in my arms. It took me years before I could talk/think about her without crying. Losing a pet is always very hard for me because I consider them family.

It's the same for me. And I think it's especially difficult when a childhood pet passes. We'd had him for almost all the years of my life for which I had memories. Charky was part of my life that had just always been, so it was a difficult thing to even process. And not being there with him... not saying good bye... that messed with me for a long time.
