My indoor four month old kitten, little bits, first born of seven, and the only long hair, and by far the
friendliest, first of seven to pur, and the one that seemed
Most affectionate to me of her 6 larger siblings, experienced head trauma jan 2. She is in the hospital still, and is recieving oxygen to minimize brain damage the vet said she may have, because she turns away from her right side where she experienced the trauma (she was tripped over by a man in heavy boots who's knee gave out) i am so heart broken for her! But i dont know if her personality, and spacial ability, memory etc is there. Nor is there any kind of aptitude test available to assess trauma to a young mamal,as far as i know. If so please inform me. Her symptoms, now stable for 2 nights, are sitting up on her own but not wanting to lower her head, her right eye does not seem to register vision, she flops her head to the left, and cowers away from the right side, not in a learned reflex response way,as if one were afraid to be struck, it does not appear like that at all. It appears more floppy headed, like a nervous system misfiring and she is prefering to circle to the left. She is only 4 months old( just got word from the vet as i am writing this tgst dhe is ok to come home!) How can i best help her regain focus and spatial ability, and care for her? I am not sure yet if her personality or abilities have faded or changed. Because she is young, will she bounce back better than if she were fully developed? I just want to do the best for her to make her heal happily.

The only thing I can offer is to discuss in detail with your vet any post-release instructions....good luck!

I had a cat about 20 years ago who had encephalitis, she was basically comatose,I had to reteach her how to walk again, she would lay on her side and scoot in a circle. Eventually she snapped out of it, although she was always a little mentally off. I had to tube feed and water her for about 3 weeks.

The vet said he nearly lost her twice but never recommended euthanasia ( it is off putting when a vet says that aweful word) this was a very good vet, gave her oxygen he said would help heal her brain, she is purring, eating and drinking well! Still weak and can not balance or walk strait and gazes off,a sign of neurological problems I want to understand more about. She will be her old self, getting affection from her two brothers but then slips away into a very still, head slumped over, metatative, daze. So i talk to her to get her to come back. They said she could go into a coma and that she has brain damage but she is alive, and purrs and curls up to me still. It is hard to know what is going on in her poor little cute fluffy hurt head.i SO appreciate the well wishes for Little Bits, and stories of your cats recoveries. It helps me feel not so alone in this endeavor . Thank you all.

Many vibes for Little Bits. I think only time will tell how much she will recover. Hopefully she will be able to have a good quality of life even with some brain damage. Lots of hugs for you for trying to save this little baby.
