Hello everyone.

I am in desperate need of advice.

My cat, Luna (about 9 months old), has been puking a pale red substance since midnight and hasn't eaten since yesterday. She has been drinking some water but lately wont. We took her to the vet at around 4pm (it is now 10:30) and they tester her temperature and gave her a shot to stop the puking and some other medication. The problem is that Luna hasn't stopped puking since, once we had gotten home from the vet we noticed that she had pooped blood but hasn't done it again. I am very worried that the shot hasn't worked and I don't know what to do.

All advice is appreciated.

This sounds serious. I would take her to an emergency vet, along with the itemized bill from your vet visit today so they can see exactly which meds were given already. The anti-nausea shot should have been working by now. Also, she may be getting dehydrated. Did the vet give you any ideas as to what could be causing the vomiting?

This needs to be considered an emergency situation for your cat.

Anytime there is persistent vomiting, it is a cause for action, to get to the bottom of why and get it fixed asap.

Here are some things from a reputable source that may be helpful.

A cat’s vomit may be streaked with fresh red blood, indicating it is from the stomach or upper part of the small intestine. If the blood is partially digested, from lower in the intestines, it will look more like coffee grounds. Your cat may show signs of tiredness, lack of appetite and/or abnormal stool, including diarrhea. Blood in the stool may appear fresh if it is from the colon or dark and tarry or sticky if it is from the upper parts of the intestinal tract or stomach.

This is a serious condition that requires immediate veterinary care. The best thing you can do for your cat is to take him or her to the closest veterinarian as soon as possible. Bleeding from the intestinal tract or vomiting blood can be life-threatening, depending on the rate of blood loss and the underlying cause.

Here are some reasons why a cat will have blood in it's vomit.
  • Chronic severe vomiting
  • Foreign bodies (including hairballs)
  • Parasites (including heartworms)
  • Underlying medical issues (including liver or kidney disease)
  • Toxicity (certain plants and heavy metals such as lead or arsenic)
  • Infection (bacterial or viral)
  • Stomach ulcers, which can be caused by medications, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids and aspirin
  • Clotting disorders (including rat poison ingestion)
  • Trauma, including eating bones or other materials, which injure the gastrointestinal tract
It is extremely important to get the cat seen again asap, I realize you were already at the vet earlier, however if the cat is still vomiting, there may very well be punctured intestines or some other trauma going on, especially since there seems to have been no effect from the anti-nausea shot, which nearly always will help.

You need to get Luna back to the vet asap. Is there an emergency vet near you? If so, I would take her there right away. You could also try calling your vet and see if they have an after hours service that can help you. Most vets don't, though.

If Luna is still vomiting the shot didn't work and since she's vomiting blood and now having blood in her stool you really should have your vet find out the cause of the vomiting and not just treat the symptoms. It could be a number of different things. One thing that comes to mind is possible poisoning. In that case it's an emergency.

If you can't get her to an emergency vet get her in to your regular vet first thing in the morning. For now I would offer water but no food until your vet says otherwise. It's possible that the blood is just from her stomach being irritated from vomiting but it could also be something more serious. If you can take her to the e-vet I would go now.

I hope Luna will feel better soon.
