Does this look like a Rodent Ulcer?

My 8 month old kitten Alistair developed a sore on his nose that came out of no where.  I was playing with him and his nose looked normal and then about an hour later after I let a new 6 month old kitten out of his safe room  (I have been slowly trying to introduce to Alistair) after about 40 minuets of Alistair hissing and growling at the new kitten if he came to close, I decided to put the new kitten back in his safe room. It was about an hour later i noticed the sore on Alistair's nose.

They did not fight with each other so it was not something the other kitten did to him. I wondering if the sore is a Rodent Ulcer and if it was stress from the other kitten that brought it on.  Alistair also had blood in his stool later that night for the first time in his life. The next morning he had another B.M. and there was red blood in it again.

I immediately took him to the vet and she gave him an anti-inflammatory steroid shot and some anti-biotics. She said she didn't know what the sore on his nose was and thought it looked like he burned it on something. I know he didn't burn or cut it on anything. I wish I could take Alistair to a holistic vet but we don't have one in my area. Will someone please take a look at the photo and tell me what they think it is and if stress from the other kitten could have caused
it?

He could have scraped it on something.  Rodent ulcers generally look different but it is a possibility.  If the vet gave a steroid shot it most likely will take care of it if it is rodent ulcer.  Sometime they need multiple treatments for it to work.

Rodent ulcers tend to be inflamed bumps and this looks crusty like from a scrape or possible reaction to something .. new dish or food or product that Alistair came in contact with? You could try gently compressing the wound with a cotton ball dipped in some warm salt water which can help to speed healing.

What did the vet say about the blood in the stool?

The vet didn't say much about the blood. I asked her if it could have been brought on by stress and she said yes. The antibiotic she prescribed Metronidazole, helps with inflammation and kills harmful bacteria that would inflame the intestines or bowels.  I did a google search for cat nose sore and found someone who described the same kind of sore on her cat's nose then she said it may or may not had to do with introducing a new cat. What a coincidence. So that is what makes me believe this was all caused by stress.

Thank you both for your replies :)

One more thing, a few hours before the sore appeared on his nose, I sprayed some Feliway on the back of my recliner where Alistair was sitting to try and reduce the stress he was having by watching the new cat explore the living room and for some reason Alistair licked the back of the chair where i sprayed it.  I don't know if the chemicals in Feliway could have irritated something by him ingesting it.

You're welcome.

I rather doubt that the spray could be the cause (at least I hope not) but maybe Alistair rubbed his nose against the spot where the Feliway was sprayed and this might have caused his nose to look scraped?

I don't know, the vet thought his nose looked like he burned it on something and it kinda does but I know he didn't because there is nothing in my house he could have burned it on. It being winter and with the furnace running a lot it does get dry in my house but i keep a humidifier going in my room where Alistair sleeps. Possibly the dry air made his nose chapped and licking it a lot made it crack. Hard to say. It will be 3 weeks this Sunday that I brought the new kitten home and it's like I'm starting all over again from scratch except a little worse. I know in a few months that Alistair may be able to tolerate the new kitten but my hopes of them being buddies are starting to fade.

Yes, that is another possibility for sure.

Re. your cats getting along .. sometimes it takes a little while. When our Thomas showed up at our door (with Max) last October, keeping him was not an option at first as we were not prepared to take on another cat, and I wasn't sure how Max and Maggie would respond. We thought such a cutie belonged to someone surely and tried to find the owner. No luck. We noticed how well Thomas and Max were getting along. So well in fact that Max and Thomas would often engage in long lick-fests and fall asleep together. Our little female Maggie however, wanted nothing to do with Thomas from the get-go. I was quite worried about that as there was lots of hissing and growling from Maggie. But, over the last few months Maggie has softened and changed her opinion, and can easily hold her own as Thomas tries to wind her up and get her to play. Watching some of their behavior with each other makes me think that she might even secretly like all of Thomas' antics as we often find the two of them in the dining room after hours, sitting no more than a foot apart? Quite the change from a few a months ago when Maggie refused to be in the same room with Thomas. So, long story short, don't despair or give up. Your kitties may never be the best of buds but they will work something out where they can co-exist.

Thank you for the encouragement. I ordered some Rescue Remedy and I'm praying that helps. I have had them separated and now Alistair will hiss and growl just by waling past the bedroom door that the new kitten is behind. He refuses to eat by the door also.

I can't believe I forgot the mention that Alistair has had cold symptoms too. He does not sneeze a lot only when he is eating he makes a sneezing sound. I always feed mostly wet food with a little dry and couldn't figure out why he wasn't eating his dry when I realized it's because his sense of smell is impaired with having a cold so he only wants wet food that has been warmed up. I have been texting all day with two breeders and they both think he has feline herpes based on his symptoms. The stress of adding a new kitten is what could have made him flare up.  He must have been born with herpes because he has not been in contact with any other cats until just this past week. He was vaccinated twice for it by 10 weeks of age according to his health report i got from the breeder when I bought him.

If it is indeed Herpes it makes me very angry that the vet did not give the right diagnosis in addition to giving him a steroid shot that from what i read makes a herpes outbreak worse!  Alistair does not have sores in his mouth and has not thrown up so that has for the most part ruled out calcivirus. what do you guys think?

This is what the rodent ulcer looks like.  I have a holistic vet and this is his blog on it.  I didn't treat it with antibiotics.  It went away on its own.  I don't think it was a scrape.  Could possibly have been fighting or something.  We got a new kitten.

Our cat Cumulus spends enormous amounts of time outdoors. A prolific hunter, Cumulus enjoys spending his days stalking mice and has been known to take down a rat or two.  Nothing phases him, even though his long, white, cotton soft coat make him look more princely than his down and dirty rat killing moments in the barn.

But at night, the royal Prince Cumulus comes into the house and heads straight for the master's bedroom.  And from the above photo, it was a little scary the other night!  That lip is certainly icky, if not scary and I had to wonder if it wasn't contagious.  Good thing... it apparently isn't.

"What's on his lip is a rodent ulcer.  What's interesting about rodent ulcers is that they may not have anything at all to do with rodents," said Jim D. Carlson, DVM CVA CVTP, holistic veterinarian and owner or Grove Animal Hospital & Holistic Center of Buffalo Grove, IL and Riverside Animal Clinic of McHenry, IL.  "The rodent ulcer can get very large and encompass the lip or part of the mouth," said Dr. Carlson.

You shouldn't wait on a veterinary visit for this kind of thing. It's unsightly, sure, but it needs treatment and a good exam to make sure something else isn't the cause.  The potential for something more serious, like carcinoma or feline leukemia is possible but rodent ulcers can also be caused by flea allergies or other environmental problems.  "A lot of people will take a wait and see approach to a lot of issues with cats because they kind of just carry on and don't show a lot of pain.  A rodent ulcer causes sensitivity and can hurt.  With the potential for significant issues, quick treatment is the best plan," said Dr. Carlson.

Hello. I been looking online for hours to find out what is wrong with our cats and I finally found your post. Our cats has the exact same thing on their nose in the middle like that. We thought maybe it was a cat fight or something at the beginning but within a couple days, one of our other cats got the same thing. I been so worried trying to figure out what's going on. I am wondering if it's a cold or something they have. Is that what your cat had, do you remember? Here is a pic of our kitty with the same thing...

Did you find out what this was? My poor kitty has the same thing but it looks much worse. I was thinking ulcer or herpes too. The vet thinks it's a viral infection and that he got it from the new kitten we have, and that he is stressed so the virus is much worse than it would normally be. :( he also has a fever. going to take him back to the vet if he doesn't start feeling better.
