We've been trying to figure out what my cat is allergic to for months and months at this point.  I've posted about this before, so I'm going to sum everything up quickly again:

She has licked out most of her fur, lost weight.... we have switched vets, switched to natural dust-free litter, tried multiple limited ingredient diets with different protein and carb sources over a 12 weeks period each time, tried topical itch sprays, probiotics, allergy meds, steroids.

When she was on the steroids every day she actually gained some weight and her hair mostly grew back, however, now that we've been weening her off them she has dropped a little weight again and all the fur on her legs is gone, and her back and sides are patchy again.

She is still her super playful, loving, social self... it's just the constant licking of fur that is of concern.  I'm starting to think it's not a food allergy.  Maybe it's an allergy to dust?  Our dog?  I am ocd clean and sweep and vacuum daily, I also have a pet air purifier in every room.  I live in a very old house with forced hot air, so I'm removing only as much as humanly possible, but I'm sure it's impossible to get it all.

Has anyone gone through anything like this?  What steps have you taken?  I've spent upwards of $5,000 at this point and I have no solution.  I'm so frustrated!  Not to mention I feel SO horrible for my little kitty.  :(

Have you ever tried any anti-histamines with her?  I have a kitty who chews on herself silly, bald belly, stomach, legs.  She was even chewing the hair off her feet.  Due to other issues we had her on Cyproheptadine for an appetite stimulant, however we noticed she wasn't eating herself silly.....so we have decided to keep her on it.   Fatty Acids are also great for allergies, we give my kitty Krill Oil for hers.

Thanks for your reply! She is on 1/3 of an antihistamine 10mg tablet/day per the vets recommendation.. How much do you give your cat? We have not tried the fatty acids however I just ordered some earlier today. Looking forward to seeing how that works.

I give her 1/2 a tablet (4mg tablet) twice a day.  I used Zytrec on her before (1/2 tablet per day).

There are 3 types of allergies:

1) flea allergy

2) Food allergy

3) environmental allergy (airborne/contact allergy)

Usually you have to treat for all 3 with an allergy cat, as you don't know which is the problem.

You can try anti-histamines- there are several available that are safe for cats. You should ask your vet for a list that you can work your way through.

Allergies are very difficult to deal with. I think my cat will need allergy shots. Nothing is working for him. I'm trying one more food change and if that fails I think I will have to get him skin tested.  Best guess is it will be $800 for testing and allergy shots.
