Today I walked 51:34 min, 3.2 mi.  It was a nice walk in a light rain. The only thing I don't like about walking in the rain is my shoes get dirty.  Thank goodness for shoe dryers!

I haven't been on a bicycle in 20 years.  I'm obviously not including stationary bikes at the gym, lol!  So the Trek Shift has me intrigued.  And someone else cleaning and oiling the bike is a huge plus for me.  The bikes I had as a kid?  Man, we trashed those things.  We never cleaned or oiled a bicycle.  Once a year you rinsed it with a hose and called it a day.  So I have LOTS of learning to do!  Including what bike to get!

ETA:  I'm torn between the Trek Shift and the Trek Neko, just reading about them...
Today I did repair rear hub of bicycle from 1940's, last 20 years it has been sitting under a tree, took best part of a day, but I did manage to get it working quite well. So I did not manage to get my exercise, but I do have now rear wheel for one of my bicycle projects.

Trek name costs in those bit of extra that I'm not sure is worth to pay as basically other brand bikes are same in that category, imo. I did buy Trek 3700 MTB and I think that there was better choices but I got bit of mislead by big brand name, however geometry and how bike rides is perhaps tad better in my Trek than some cheaper less known brands. Parts were not any different from cheapest bike available, so I feel that I did spend bit too much.

But between Shift and Neko, I think that it is mostly choosing what kind of riding you want to do, with Shift it looks like to be bike that is easy to pick up and ride, go to shop or park, generally bike for short trips done often, where as Neko looks to be bike that is for longer riding and perhaps more serious riding.

I did read they both have 7 speed rear sprocket which starts to be bit difficult to find replacement parts, most bikes sold these days have cassette type rear gears and 7 speed can be older type which can mean that when you need new parts some years from now, they can be impossible to find. Solution is to buy replacement rear gears and chain with the bike, that way one has them in future :)

But I also read that there is version from Neko that has 8 speed sprocket at rear, even 8 speed seem to be fading star, but situation is tad better with that. I did upgrade my hybrid to 9 speed as I wanted bit more choice of gears, more teeth to rear so I get better climbing ability (or because my legs are so weak :D ).

Price with bikes is always bit of issue, price does go really fast up with even bit better features, I thought that I get basic model bike and upgrade that with parts from chainreactioncycles to get 'bigger' model with lower cost, but this of course works much better if one has possibility to do all bike mechanic stuff for bike.

I would pick Neko from those two for exercise type of riding (despite not being on bike for long time), but I do recommend to test ride both before buying, if anyway possible. Geometry of bike and body need to match and only test ride will tell if bike will work or not.

Also I'm just judging this by pics I found, but when you exercise and even if there is flat ground, there is wind and more gears will help to stay in correct heart rate range, with less gears it is not so easy when that darn head wind hits which is quite often, then more gears allow one to go slower while still pedaling at good rate which is also important when exercising, more repeats less weights, same principle works with bike too, one just pushes pedal more often with less force, pedal is kind of weight one pushes :D

Thanks for that, JTbo!  I forgot to mention that we have a lot of beach cruisers and tourists that bike, so I'm not sure how "fast" I should go on the bike paths.  That makes me lean back to the Shift.  Then I think of wanting to do longer rides for fitness, then I lean back to the Neko.  And yes, I want to try all my options out before plunking down that kind of money.

You can always pull bit of brake lever and keep lower gear, imagining going fast, legs will not know difference :D

2 miles walking during lunch.

Dr's office just called. I am to go in tomorrow morning at 8:30; they want to talk to me about the x-ray; they're thinking stress fractures.

I can totally pull off the smiling while peddling like mad and going practically nowhere.  It's a gift of mine.

You know, it very well could be.  I'll be sending lots of vibes that it's something easy to deal with and healing soon!

Thanks, guys.

Stress fractures (yeah, more than one). Doctor is making an appt with the ortho-weenies.....she's thinking there will be no physical therapy for a while anyway because I'm probably going to be wearing a boot. I don't know for how long; it all depends on how bad the ortho-weenie thinks the fractures are. She did say that, if my foot does not hurt at all, she won't make me stop using the elliptical. Yet. Although she thinks the ortho-weenie will stop me from doing everything for a while. No walking even right now. She saw the look on my face and told me not to bother going into work today...to go home and hit the couch with my Nook and the cats for the day. But I'm at work.

I made it through that crappy winter....and now that the weather is getting gorgeous, here I am.

(One of my GFs has been in a boot cast now since February....she has a broken ankle and it's not healing properly. Anyway, she and I have always said that we share a brain...and that I have the smart part
. So I called her this morning and told her that now we can share a boot, too. She laughed. So did I, but I'm not particularly amused by the whole thing.

About a year or so ago, I gave my Cardio-Glide to another GF, but she's not using it at all. I called her this morning and asked if I could borrow it back again; if the doctor thinks the Cardio-Glide is OK, I'll try to use that until I can start walking again. A Cardio Glide is a piece of equipment that you sit on. You row with your arms and you use your feet to push out at the same time, using your arms to pull it all back in again. Since I'd be sitting, maybe the ortho will let me do this, even with the boot. It's better than nothing at this point.)

I may be down, but I swear, I'm not out.

Winchester, can you walk on your hands? I did read some guy who made some records by running on hands. I wish I had such balance, it would be quite convenient to keep going on hands when legs are not going for any reason :D

What a great motivation this is! :

Shame that everything goes black when I'm upside down, can't practice much of such, but it certainly would be a great skill :)

I'm sorry Winchester. I know it's not great news. But I'd rather have that than soft tissue injuries. So, other than ortho and PT, what about how to prevent these stress fractures in the future? Are we talking about maybe a bone scan in the future? You're walking which is GREAT for bone density, but something here is amiss. Could it have been just the old shoes? I'm just throwing out questions for you to ask your doctors/PT people. Sometimes more than one brain while brainstorming is helpful. ;) Many vibes that this gets dealt with soon. OH! And warm weather, and what do you have? A pool! Water walking, baby!

Ran 25 min this morning. Even at 55 degrees, I got dizzy. I walked for a min after 20 min. I drank about 6 oz of OJ right before walking out the door. I'm stumped. Maybe I should have a complex carb instead?

Soooo...drum roll...I got my graduation present! I decided against a Trek bicycle after all. Our bike paths are full of slow tourists and dog walkers. But not the north end of the island, that's faster riding. But I've got to get there. Anyway, the Electra Townie is a bike that was practically made for this island in mind. I can ride for long periods due to comfort, go slow when I want, and go faster when I want (21 speed). I love it!

That bike is like best bits of those two Trek bikes combined, should work really well for your riding, congrats! :D

I have found out that I need a loads of carbon hydrates for best performance, if I run out of them I feel like not being able to move, dizzyness can be fluctuating (or low) blood sugar level, I guess, but I'm not an expert!

Also if blood pressure drops it can cause dizzyness.

We are getting surprise heat wave here at least according to forecast, temperature changes from +5C to +26C in few days, at southern part of country it can be even up to +29C.

Tomorrow is sunny and first t-shirt cycling weather day, so I will certainly take advantage of that, but also I need to do rest of firewood, so it will be hot from tomorrow, also next week is warm and I need to visit in a city so that will be 70km bicycling trip :D

Sorry about your foot Winchester. I guess it's good to have an answer. There will be a way for you to exercise. I hope you find it. :vibes: I've been using a rowing machine. Wow it good exercise. Same concept as your machine. I'm thinking?

Fabulous bike Peaches!!

Good work JTbo.

I have completed my gruelling week. I tried to do those sprints around an oval on Thursday. I was pathetic. After 3 mins I felt the same as after 15 mins last time. I had a rest and a second attempt but it was no better. Yesterday I did my shoulders and abs.
Now I have a whole week off and at this stage I'm pretty glad about that. I have nothing left.

Keep going everybody

It will be OK. I'm depressed as all heck about it, but it will be OK. Nice to know exactly what's wrong and how to deal with it. What I'm going to have trouble dealing with is not walking. I live for those walks during lunch.

A bone scan a couple years ago confirmed that I am osteopaenic (sp?), but I have been taking Vit D, along with my calcium now for years. I also take Osteo Bi-flex, twice a day. That's another reason why walking (weight-bearing) was so good for me. I do wonder if it wasn't the old shoes that, at least, started it. Will talk to my ortho-guy. (I think he's going to yell at me, though, as he had told me a couple years ago--I had bad shin splints then-- to back off a bit. And instead, I increased my exercise time, although I did work between the elliptical and the walking. He always says, "We're not getting any younger and we have to think about our age now." ) Thank you.

Talked to my GF and I can pick up the Cardio Glide some night next week.....she's never even touched the thing the whole time she's had it. I hope it will help with some exercise for me.

Peaches, I never even thought about the pool!
Once we get it opened and get the water in order, yes, I can do that....as long as it's warm enough. As a rule, I don't touch the water until air temps get into the 80s at least. We do use a solar blanket to get the water temperature up for me as I like the water warm.  (I'm such a warmish girl....I really hate being cold.)

That's going to be a great bike for you, Peaches! Enjoy!

Keep going everybody! Tammat, you enjoy a well-earned rest!

@Winchester It may be time to explore more bio-available calcium supplements.  Or it may be time to consider medications that make your bones take up the calcium rather than dump a bunch of calcium into your bloodstream only for your kidneys to work harder excreting it.  I know, I know...more medications.  But it beats broken bones.  In any case all I'm trying to say is that there are options.  You just have to talk with your doctors to see which options will work best for you.  You're already doing so many right things by eating a wide variety of healthy foods, not smoking, and walking.

You know, after I posted yesterday about exercise other than walking...biking!  Seriously, that kicked my behind and no pounding my feet.  It used my muscles differently too.  While I love cold water, I can only imagine the temps there.  I'm waking up at 7 am to 55 F and I'm about 30 min north of the FL state line.  You couldn't talk me into going into water at this hour!

I went on a bike ride this morning, about 5.25 mi in 32 min.  It was so nice to see so many things in a short amount of time.  My seat bones are a bit sore but that's OK, I know it'll pass.  I tried eating a bowl of instant oatmeal first thing this morning to see if I could run this morning and bike later, but instead I felt nauseated.  Maybe over time my stomach will get used to it.  At least I had a good bike ride!

I can add another 55 min ride to my exercise today, about 10 mi.  Seat bones are real sore now!  LOL

I had a good 40-45 minute walk through a local rhododendron garden today - it was Blue Poppy day (they are so lovely!).

20km bicycling, I guess that is somewhere around 12.4 miles.

After long forest road I found out it had this sign on other end, I guess it was illegal to ride bicycle there:

Poor pic quality because I had only pocket computer with me for map reading purposes.

These kind of roads and scenery:

On that small road there was also lot of these familiar paw prints:
