Normally the first vaccines are given at 8 weeks.  Is your kitty coming from a breeder?  If so he may already have the first shots when you get him.

I'm hoping that this is a misunderstanding rather than an actual practice. Without vaccination against some diseases such as rabies, titers are just going to tell you that the cat has no immunity against the rabies virus. I can understand waiting to vaccinate immune-compromised cats and kittens; but if you're about to take it home I'm assuming it's healthy.

I would be really concerned about distemper.  Kittens are very vulnerable to it, it's actually closely related to canine parvo rather than canine distemper.  Keeping kittens indoors doesn't guarantee that they won't be exposed.  The virus can survive for a very long time in the environment, mostly in soil.  We can bring it in on our shoes.

I know for a very long time it was common practice to over vaccinate but now I think some people have went too far the other way.  We can cut back on vaccinating from what used to be the norm without leaving our pets vulnerable to disease.  There is no need to throw the baby out with the bath water, so to speak.

If you know the date you'll be picking up your kitty, go ahead and call your vet and set up an appt for a meet & greet and to start kitten shots.  I wouldn't freak out about the kitty not being vaccinated as long as it's been tested for FIV/FeLV.
