Here it is, 3:20 am, and I am typing and bawling...

I recieved an email tonight from someone a couple of towns over from me, that I am so upset about, I just can't shake it.

She writes about a young male cat in her apt complex who, a couple years ago had a collar with a name tag (Thomas)

Then about a year ago she saw his collar was taken off and he had a limp tail, just hanging behind him like a rope.

He is now incontinent, both.

He wanders around everyday just looking for anyone to pet him and love him, he is extremely affectionate but most chase him away. (probably poopy/smelly)

So he is fed, but is a lost soul, sleeping in bushes trying to stay warm.

What I know is, it is highly unlikely he will ever recover, he surely had nerve damage with his tail injury, and is never going to regain control over his bladder/bowels.

Can I help him find a home....

I realize, despite how desperately I try to save every cat I come across, that there really is no place for him. His tail would need to be amputated to prevent soiling and traumatizing it, but will need a diaper always. This means he is better off being put to sleep.

Who would adopt a cat like that? Nobody, sadly, tragically, but it's the truth.

It's breaking my heart, the part that she said he wanders around every day looking for someone to pet him....ugh. That just kills me.

OMG how sad ! What about an outdoor heated pen ? Not ideal I know every cat should have a loving indoor home. But got to be better than putting to sleep

I am so sorry to read of this situation. Poor Kitty! I think you and this person who emailed you can definitely help this cat. Please don't feel that this is a lost cause as there is always someone out there willing to give animals with limitations or disabilities a second chance. Case in point, in my area here in Canada, there was a very tragic case of abuse of a female dog at the hands of the owner's son who took a shovel and his boots to this dog and beat the hell out of it. Long story short, the female dog survived (miraculously), but with multiple injuries and the chance that she would lose an eye. The outpouring of love and support for this situation has been amazing. There were many who stepped up wanting to adopt this dog who is badly disfigured and will require multiple operations to fix her face. She is doing very well the last I heard about her.

If you or this person can locate a rescue shelter in your area and give them a call, the shelter may have emergency funds to ensure that this fellow gets the medical treatment he needs, or at the very least provide him with a place where he can be cleaned up, safe and warm. Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Someone would take him in and love him, I'm sure.

Every day I read stories on these forums from people who have gone out of their way to help their pets or strays that they've found. There are a lot of people out their who feel the same way as us about animals.

Being incontinent is bad, but it sounds as if Thomas has bags of charm and affection to make up for it.

I hope he gets another chance, can't believe his original owners were so heartless as to just kick him out like that.

If all else fails, I would try to contact Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah.  They take in difficult cases like this.  When my dad retired from the vet we had several adoption kitties who needed homes.  We had a kitty who had severe Cerebral Hypoplasia she couldn't even walk and hardly used the litter box.  They took her in and rehabilitate her, got her so she could walk better and found her a home.  Her new home loves her so much, she even has a facebook page.  People out there will adopt cats with issues it just may take some time.  I also know of a sanctuary in Nevada who was willing to take the CH kitty we had.  There are places that will take kitties like this.  I know a lady who specializes in finding special needs kitties homes, I think she is actually located in CA, I can give you her email and fb contact if you'd like.
