What does everyone use to brush their cat's teeth?

The idea of taking my kitties in every year to be put under for a teeth cleaning is not appealing so I want to start brushing their teeth to help prevent the need for the 'cleaning' so often.

Also, what technique do you use to get them to allow you in their mouth enough to do the brushing?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Your babies are beautiful! Ok, so for brushing their teeth:
1. you can use a little finger brush, a piece of gauze, a little thin cloth, etc.
2. you don't need to get the inside of their teeth, just the outside. So you don't have to actually open their mouths, just rub along their outer teeth, on the inside of their 'lips' (it's the out side of their back teeth that get the dirtiest)
3. get them used to you touching thier mouths first. Just touch their teeth with your finger now and then, getting them used to the feeling
4. there's also oral cleansing gels you can get from your vet

I use Petrodex Malt Flavor and they love it. Once a day for about a week or so I put a little bit on my finger and let them lick it off, each day I tried to get them a little more used to me touching their teeth. Like for example day 1 I just let them lick it, day 2 I would kind of rub the teeth while they were trying to lick it, until it got to the point where they would even let me massage their gums without getting upset. Then I brought out one of those little finger toothbrushes, and pretty much did the same with that until they didn't mind me actually burshing their teeth with it. Then I graduated to the kitty toothbrush slowly introducing it the same way. Now I only brush their teeth about once a week and they have no problems with it.

i just brushed my furbabies' teeth this morning. i use a mini toothbrush (i got mine from the hello kitty store) and a pet toothpaste - Veterinarian's Best Tartar and Plaque Control DentalCare Gel. i see an 800 no. at the back of the toothpaste: 1800-866-PETS.

Daisy n Venus do not like their teeth brushed too much, however, i gotta do what i gotta do, for their sake.

hey thanks guys, I'm actually excited about trying it!

what kind of results do you see? does it help on the tartar and inflamed gums as far as prevention goes, can you see a difference?

thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes!
