Many of the feline joint supplements I have seen use HCL, but the human grade products use 2KCL. I've switched many of my cats' supplements to human grade (i.e., probiotics, l-lysine), but I'm not sure about the glucosamine. I did a little research and read that HCL is better, but can't understand why almost all human grade joint supplements use 2KCL. If HCL is better, then I'll have to stick with a joint supplement made for cats.

Any thoughts on this? What do you all use as a joint supplement?

My Boo has arthritis. I've used Cosequin for Cats and Joint Max for Cats. Krill oil is out, unfortunately. I've recently tried this and it was making him vomit.

I was talking to my human nutritionist about joint supplements for my (human) pain, and she said to buy Glucosamine sulfate, not Glucosamine HCL. I don't know why.

Forgive me for asking a question that's probably been answered elsewhere, but is Adequan an option?

I suppose Adequan is an option. It's a prescription and I haven't talked to my vet about it. I was hoping to go with something easier to get. I don't know how expensive Adequan is, either.

Boo's arthritis is not overly severe or debilitating (yet), so he doesn't need the strongest thing on the market. He still gets good clearance jumping onto high places, but he does the bunny hop down the steps.

What I did, and you can mention this option to your vet, was buy an individual shot once a month from them (after doing a month of loading doses). We give it subQ in cats, IM I just wasn't comfortable with even if it were an option. You can certainly go with various anti-inflammatory options like fish oil at the same time. The difference with Adequan is that it helps repair the joint rather than just stop the inflammation process. I wish I had known years earlier that it could be used on cats (off label), it made that big a difference in Grey. It wasn't terribly expensive either, after the month of loading doses. I want to say it cost under $20 for the monthly shot.

My own Dr told me to use Glucosamine HCL.  I use Cosequin for my two arthritic kitties and just added Krill Oil to their regiment as well.  I also am giving a couple of homeopathic remedies which I think are definitely helping with DeeJay's arthritis.  I just smash up the pill and mix it in her food.

I don't know about the glucosamine, but I did remember this discussion - because I know that glucosamine, chrondroitin, msm and hyaluronic acid together help more than just glucosamine/chrondroitin alone. This person found a supplement (or two?) you might want to consider, since the krill oil is out:

I fostered a cat who turned out to have arthritis, he was around two years old.  The vet recommended Dasuquin (   ) and from what I remember, another member when asked about Consequin vs. Dasuquin, indicated Dasuquin was more bio-available.  (My computer won't let me link.)

The current supplement I'm giving Boo contains glucosamine sulfate 2KCL, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM. I was just wondering if anyone knew if the 2KCL doesn't work as well in cats.

I did come across Dasuquin. It's basically the same as Cosequin, but with the added ASU (avocado/soybean unsaponifiables). I wasn't sure about the ASU, as I don't know much about that. Haven't done any research on it, yet.
