We looked out the kitchen window up to the back end of our property and this is what we saw....

These are three of our "babies" who made it through hunting season.

A.K.A. The corn thieves -- It was either the deer or raccoons who stole every single ear of corn from the garden this past summer. Poor Rick waged war on the garden varmints....and lost. Badly.

Wow! How beautiful, and you're lucky to be able to watch them from the comfort of your kitchen.
Do you put anything out for them to encourage them to come?

They are so beautiful in the snow. Our deer hunting season doesn't end till the end of February and I have seen quite a few this year - a pair of yo0ung ones crossed the road in front of me the other day. Then I hear the dogs and guns at the weekends and I fear for them.

We don't put anything out for them at all. But we have an oak tree in the side yard and they actually have created a path through the yard to the tree because of all the acorns. Evidently deer love acorns. Our neighbors used to feed all the wildlife; they put apples, ears of corn, peanuts, bread cubes, and seeds in their backyard for everything. But the neighbors have decided to move permanently to their cabin out along the creek and their house is up for sale. So nobody is feeding the animals anymore. And we're not going there; Rick says he doesn't want to start it.

A lot of times, I'll be folding laundry at the kitchen table or doing chores in the kitchen and looking out the window at the deer. We've had as many as five deer out back at a time, although lately we've been only seeing these three. One night a few weeks ago, we heard a crash out front; somebody had hit one of the deer as it was trying to cross the road. We called the game commission so they could come out and take the carcass. And we were hearing a lot of rifle shots during hunting season, so we're thinking one of them died then.

When I was still walking out through here, I was walking back one night. Right across the road in front of our house stood a mama with two babies. Just standing there. They're relatively tame (because of being fed), so they don't really startle all that easily anymore. She and the babies stood there with me; I was talking to them for a couple minutes. Then a car came down the road and they took off.

It's kind of neat to be making supper or washing dishes and watching the deer at the same time. Unless it's summer and the garden is growing....then, not so much.
