I just realized that Dandy is nearly 6 mos. and I have yet to find her a food that she can eat as an adult and that she will eat.  I want a decent food but haven't won the lottery yet.  There isn't much to try at our Petco so I mostly have to try ordering a case and the outdoor cat and the dog are still eating Hound & Gatos Chicken.

I had considered Evo but don't know what to think.  She can't stay on these little Wellness cans forever and I don't want to do FF.

Evo is high in fat and does contain carageenan (if that's something that bothers you). Now, cats usually handle fat very well so I'm not saying that's bad, just pointing it out. But my cats like the chicken & turkey kind, and they usually don't like higher-quality canned foods, so I think it's fairly well accepted by most cats. I do think a good variety is best, though. Eating only one kind of food for years just can't be good :/.

I'm trying for a good variety, but I haven't made a start yet
.  High fat is so-so but she needs to eat it. I know it's got carrageenan but I'm about ready to throw in the towel. I have to feed her something.

Try the company links in my signature to order single cans of cat food. The Hound and Gatos is a wonderful brand and I would stick to that, try other flavors of it plus some other brands to round out the menu. Budget brands that are good are Fancy Feast classic line, Sheba, and Friskies pate.  The Fancy Feast and Friskies can be found at Costco.

Thanks again.  I wish she liked the Hound & Gatos better.  With apologies to Weruva, I hope it is the Weruva chicken and not the FF that gave her some issues. We have quite a bit of Weruva to finish and she loves it, but the FF was such a hit mixed with the H&G. She's had several other Classic flavors with no problems. I don't plan to order Weruva again.

We have Walmart and the Petco and that's it. I do have quite a FF supply because Giant Eagle had a sale and I sent my husband for chicken.

Wellness does come in the larger cans, but you might have to buy them online.  There are several varieties available that are grain-free.

What about Nature's Variety Instinct?  The dog formula is exactly the same as cat so you can get the larger 13.2 oz cans which are a lot cheaper per ounce.  Our Petco carries tons of their stuff.

sheba is pretty good. all their cans are grain free and mostly protein. its cheap and when i cant get my hands on authority, or wellness, i go to sheba. i usually stick to the pates only tho...and my cats like it. $0.59 a can at pet smart. sometimes on sale its $0.50 cents a can (like now)

Thank you.  This is still driving me bonkers.  I hope I can find something other than Wellness when I get to Petsmart, but I know they don't have Evo. Everything that starts with "Nature's" had all kind of blurred together so I don't remember if they had Nature's Instinct or not.  We've tried our two days of FF and it doesn't seem to be an issue, except that she ate over four cans of it, plus some dry, but I'd rather feed something better as a main food. It's not exactly cheap when she eats it like that either.

i usually focus on the fact that the protein content is high, and that the food is grain free. If you go around buying all "the best" cat food for your cat, you're going to go broke, and sometimes, as i've learned, "the best" doesn't always taste good (because they don't add artificial flavors) so your kitties won't take to it.

I try to get a good can of "the best", which for me is wellness grain free, and then i have the cheaper but also good option of sheba. I mix the foods for my babies and serve it (for the most part). Since they're both grain free i don't worry much. and don't always be put off by "meat by products"...because that usually means organs and cats need that too (if you look up raw cat food diets, a lot of them include the organs as well, they have some nutrients the cats need). They each get 1-2 tablespoons each in the morning and again in the evening. and i leave out grain free kibble (1/2 cup for both to share) so they can munch on it through out the day.

a cat will eat as much as you give him/her, so its not always the food's fault that your cat gains weight. You have to find a balance that works for your kitty and for you. Supplement snacks and treats throughout the day for good behavior and for play times. My cats are a good weight, they're not skinny with ribs sticking out, and they're not over weight.

I agree with you about the "best."  When I started looking for food, I found some lists and realized I couldn't feed the cat and us too if I followed some of those recommendations.
