Well, I cannot get a break. Rexy girl is having issues and now my new kitty has his own issue. And all right before the regular vet clinics will close for Christmas etc.

My newish 5 1/2 month old kitty has some swelling in his leg and is limping - came on quite suddenly. Took him immediately into vet and it appears he has a small puncture wound that has closed over and is infected (not very noticeable to my eyes as no abscessing etc.) - and he has a mild fever (but is still eating thankfully, but he is reluctant to move about). He seems ouchy when you touch that area. No abscessing at this point or anything. Started on antibiotics. Kitty is getting along well with resident cats, but does pounce on them now and again so someone must have accidentally got him a bit harder than they probably intended. All of my cats are indoor only so this happened in the house.

I know nothing about puncture wounds other than what my vet told me today and what I can research online. What can I expect? Will it abscess for certain or maybe it will abscess and maybe it won't. Poor wee tot is quite sore when you touch that area.

What a worry. I have Rexy kitty with some serious issues with her lungs once again, and now this other issue with kitty. What a difficult week it has been on the cat health front.

p.s. I made a typo in the thread title - is there some moderator who can fix this perhaps?

Did the vet open it up?   I would make sure to keep it open and draining, if it closes up she might need surgery to go in and open it up.  You can apply a warm wash rag to the site a few times a day it will help draw out any infection.  Keep it clean as possible, you can use a little antibacterial soap on a wash cloth.  Did the vet give you oral or topical antibiotics or both?

I feel your pain, right now I am dealing with my old girl who may or may not have cancer, my middle boy who has a chronic respiratory infection and my next oldest girl who probably has a bladder infection.

If he has a small puncture wound that has closed over and is infected, did the Vet lance it to open it up so it could drain?  I would think that would need to be done to prevent an abscess, and as cprcheetah pointed out above, then applying warm compresses will help draw out any gunk from inside the would.  antibiotics are good, of course, which I see he is now on.

Didn't the Vet give you any more instructions as to what to expect?  Are they open today so you could give them a call?  One thing that may happen is side effects from the antibiotic like lethergy and nausea, etc.  Just depends on the kitty and the antibiotic.
