Hi guys.. Im planning to get a himalayan kitten from a friend who is a breeder. Ive seen the kittens and they're beautiful! The kittens are just 13 days old today. Im planning to get her sometime around the last week of january next year. My concern is that. Would the kitten survive if i adopted it too young? And from where they live, the climate is cool and gets up to around 10 to 15 degrees celsius and from where we live it gets up to 30 to 40 degrees celsius. And would the kitten survive in a 4 hour travel by bus? Im concerned about these things because im going to give the kitten to my mom since its her birthday on february next year. Please please help me. Thanks

From what I know about breeders, they won't adopt kittens out until they are around 12 weeks old.

The kitten will be about 6-7 weeks old when you want to get her, which is way too young to be removed from her mother. What you need to do is give your mother a picture of the kitten for her birthday. And then you guys can go get the kitten when she is ready to be separated from her family.

And yes, it is dangerous for a young kitten to be in a cold, stressful situation like a 4 hour bus ride in the dead of winter.

I agree with Fluffybeard´s  advices.  Give your mom a pic and descritpion AND a cat book  including care of kittens and cats, and the 12 weeks kitten somewhat later.

You are sure your mom will be happy for the care of that long fur?

It is even good NOT to give a kitten on Christmas or birthday, if there are many guests and a lot of excitement...

Give the kitten two days after, after all the cleaning is done.

Good luck!

Giving kittens or puppies as presents is surrounded with problems.  Also at the end of January the kitten will only be 7 weeks old, and that is far too young.  My own cat's kittens were only starting to wean at that age, these might be the same.  Had they left home at that age at least one of them would have died - as it was he was very ill when mum suddenly stopped feeding them for a few days.

Are you wanting to give her a kitten because she wants one, or because you do?

Wow!! Thank you guys for the response.. Yes, actually shunra, weve been planning to have a cat. So i just want to surprise my mom on her birthday. But oh well, if the kitten is vulnerable during those weeks and it is crucial to be with her mom then ill just get her when she is ready. Mmmm. Can the cat survive in an atmosphere with temperatures ranging from 30 to 40 degrees celsius? and if can i get her last 3rd week of february? Thanks..

So your mother lives with you?

It sounds awful hot for a full coated cat like a Himalayan by which I presume you mean a colour point Persian. Its also a big change of climate.

Can you find a kitten from the same climate as you have? The journey would leave a kitten very vulnerable if anything goes wrong.

Right, it sounds like very hot climate for an longhaired cat.  I would recommend you get a shorthaired cat instead!

If it is important for you with persians, try with its shorthaired cousin the Exotic.

You CAN also try and cut off the fur in the summer half year.

Re age of kittens.   Anything less than 8 weeks is bad.  CAN be done in a dire emergency, like saving the life, but nothing we would do voluntarily. 8 weeks isnt optimal either, but it is no longer a catastrophe.

The modern recommendation is 12 weeks, to be with mom and the siblings...

And persians tends to be slow dewelopers, so it doesnt pays and try to shorten it to say, 10 weeks...

So, if you still want the longhaired himalayan persian, try and talk with the breeder so they are with the mom to 12 weeks.

But we would recommend you a shorthaired cat instead, also here 12 or at least 10 weeks, if possible.

Unless you are saving its live by an earlier adopion, of course.

Adopting homeless half wild cats may be good to take them from mom early - as it is easier to foster them into loving family cats who arent afraid of strangers either..  But this is one of the few exceptions from the rules!

Good luck!

Do you have air conditioning? If so, I think a longhair will be fine as long as you keep him/her inside and properly groomed. But if you don't have A/C or plan to let the cat go outdoors I would recommend a shorthair.

I agree that 7 weeks is too young, especially with a long bus ride. Wait until they're older; the 3rd week of February seems like a good time frame.

One thing I've heard of people doing when they want to give a kitty as a gift is to get all the proper kitten accessories and give those on the gift-giving occasion, with a promise of the kitten to come later. With the added benefit of having everything all set up when the kitty comes home.
