Hi all!

My Percy was just neutered a little more than 24 hours ago. I noticed that he has not gone back to his normal appetite. He just looks at his favorite wet food, smells it then walks away.

What do I do? Should I be worried? How do I know that it is something alarming already?

Thanks!

If he still isn't eating tomorrow then I would start doing some things to try to get him to eat.  Things like warming his food and trying meat baby food, the kind without onion.  His system may still be a little off from the anesthetic.

Sometimes the anesthesia upsets their system for about 24 hours.  If he's not eating normally tomorrow I would recommend trying enticement methods such as warming his food, adding parmasan cheese, baby food etc.

Hm. I think it sounds normal for now, as cprcheetah says, the anesthesia can affect your kitty for 24 hours. Just keep watching him :)

Thanks for your replies. The most that Percy did today was lick the gravy or sauce of his wet food. He barely chewed anything. Is that effort of his a good sign even just a bit? His doctor had been out of touch and will be for the next two days. Am worried but hopeful that Percy will be his usual self by tomorrow. He is also still lethargic up to now.

Has he eaten anything today?  You can try warming the food up just a bit to enhance the aroma and see if he'll eat that.

Sometimes really strong smelling food can do the trick. A little tuna water, or small amount of tuna itself (spring water cans), a little slice of thin ham. Perhaps try roasting a little bit of chicken, or boiling it to make a broth. Warming cat food is also a good idea because it smells stronger.   Is he drinking? If not, try the boiling chicken method, may just help get both into him.  Sometimes human food (not to much fish) can be the thing to get a cat up and running again.  Good luck to you both

It could be nausea. It could also be tension in his abdominal wall, making a full belly a little painful. He's still probably a bit dazed from being put under.

These issues aren't abnormal. But like others said, if he hasn't eaten *anything* after a day or so, consult a vet. This doesn't necessarily mean there's anything super wrong. It's just that it's so important that cats eat regularly. He might just need a bit of medical help to eat more. Pain killer, appetite stimulant, etc.

It's good he's making some kind of effort. Encourage him with whatever he loves the most. But if he hasn't eaten within the next day, contact whatever vet you can.

Thanks for all your help!

Percy is not yet the ravenous eater as he was.  He still just licks the sauce of his favorite food but turns a snob nose against the rest of the meat.  In fact, he unusually turned his back on the food I was eating.  Normally, he'd try to dip his nose into whatever I have on my plate.   I'll try to do the tricks you gave.  Maybe some Christmas ham would be interesting for him?

Good thing with him though is he is more awake now and trying to get his playful self back again.  It's just the food I am worried about. And the water.  He used to drink so much water (surprisingly!).  I don't know if lapping up the water is some kind of play for him but nevertheless, it makes him drink a lot.  But now he has not touched his water bowl.  He doesn't even like going to his food tray.
