Ouchee!  This morning our older boy Si got a hold of piece of paper that I crumpled up intending to trash.  I reached down while he was playing with it to take it away & yowzer .. he bit the paper at the same time.  Resulted in me squealing a bit, retrieving the paper, however I already knew two of his fangs made puncture contact.

I squeezed the daylights out of my thumb to make both sites bleed before starting to soak it in warm, soapy water.  It is one puncture on the left thumb just under the nail and one dead center of the thumb pad.

Sore as all get out of course and the pad of my thumb feels firm (probably a little swollen from the trauma).

Are there specific things I should watch for before possibly getting antibiotics for it, or just a wait and see?  I am current on tetanus shots (within the past 5yrs).

All experience appreciated!

Fingers have a great deal of nerve endings, so it will be more painful than say if it happened on your arm or the back of your hand

What are the signs and symptoms of a wound infection?

If the wound begins to drain yellow or greenish fluid (pus), or if the skin around the wound becomes red, warm, swollen, or increasingly painful; a wound infection may be present and medical care should be sought. Any red streaking of the skin around the wound may indicate an infection in the system that drains fluid from the tissues, called the lymph system. This infection (lymphangitis) can be serious, especially if it is accompanied by a fever. Prompt medical care should be sought if streaking redness from a wound is noticed.

Use Polysporin OIntment to help fight infection and promote healing. Apply a dressing to keep the wound clean. Make sure you keep the wound clean and dry. Hard to do when it's your thumb, but important. If the dressing gets wet, change it.

If you don't have any allergies, you can take Tylenol Extra Strength and Ibuprofen for the pain.

Thanks for the reply Natalie.  I've been grazed a million times by Si playing rough, but never had a cat bite accidentally or otherwise.   Will definitely keep my eye on it, keeping it clean and dry.  And luckily we do have some Neosporin too.

Patches got me good on the top of one of my toes 2 weeks ago, long story and I deserved it, only the second time I had heard him hiss.  Luckily it didn't get infected.  Patches doesn't get the rabies vaccine anymore because of health issues, animal bites have to be reported and it would've turned into a big mess.  Because of the way he bit me mine bled quite a bit and I just let it bleed.  I know that helps.
