My cat Pixie has been on a weight loss program for about a month. She is small-framed cat who should weigh 9-10 pounds. Her weight on 11/19 was 13 lbs 9 oz. My vet wanted her on a prescription weight loss food, but I decided to try portion control instead. Pixie has lost about 6 ounces total but she has stalled at 13 lbs 3 oz, where she's been for the last two weeks.
I am feeding her Merrick's Purrfect Bistro Chicken Pate and Duck Pate. She gets about 3/4 of a 5.5 oz can per day, split into two meals. She eats very fast then tries to steal food from the other cats no matter how much I give her, so I now feed her a sliver at a time -about a half tablespoon- let her finish it, then give her another sliver, trying to slow her down a bit. The chicken has 185 kcal/5.5 oz can and the duck has 156 kcal/5.5 oz can. So she is getting about 117-139 kcals per day. I know that she snitches food from my other cats when she can, though I do watch her and try to keep that to a minimum. So with her snacking, let's say she's getting 120-145 kcal per day.
At that calorie count, it seems like she should still be losing weight. If I hold at this feeding level, will she continue to lose? I don't want to cut back on her food too much; she already acts like she's starving all the time. I was thinking about switching to or rotating in Weruva or Tiki Cat chicken flavors that are higher in protein but have a lower carb content.
Also, she plays a bit more now that she has lost some weight, but I have another cat who is a toy hog, so she doesn't get as much play time as I'd like. I'm sure more exercise would be beneficial.
Any suggestions to help nudge her weight loss along a bit?
