Hello Everyone ~ I'm new here.  I have 3 cats.  One is 6, one 5, and the last I just rescued as a kitten 5 months ago. (All are rescues, all are male and all get along fine.) The 5-year-old has been peeing outside of his box for the last several months and it is driving me nuts.  Prior to this my cats have all been very well-behaved.  (He either goes on a throw rug, which I need to cover a stain, or on my loveseat.)  This activity started a couple of years ago when I went away for a 2 week vacation and had a cat-sitter that they like watching them.  However, it seemed to resolve itself once I returned. This last time seems to perhaps been prompted by the arrival of the new kitten.  However, when my cat goes on the throw rug -- he does it right in front of me -- like he doesn't know that it is wrong!  And I know that he knows better than that!

I usually spray him with a squirt gun if I catch him in the act, but that hasn't helped.  I also bought some pet block, urine repellant spray -- but that hasn't done much either.  Do any of you have any suggestions??  Thanks in advance!!

Happy Holidays,

The first thing I would do is get him checked for a UTI.  If there is no infection then look at the behavior type causes.  Please stop with spraying water, he acts like he doesn't know it's wrong because he doesn't.  It could well be the addition of a new kitten.

Thanks for the reply.  I haven't sprayed him since he responded that he didn't understand that what he was doing was wrong.  Right after I posted, he actually pooped on the rug!!  Which was really a first!!  I'm going to get him to a vet.  Again, thanks.

Definitely the 1st step any time you have a kitty who doesn't use the litterbox is to get it checked by the vet for a UTI.  Then if that is negative you can look into behavioral issues and changes.
